Hi am looking to purchase a 1.5HP air con to replace my old one ( about 10 years old). Air con repairman said no point in repairing any longer, not efficient. It has been repaired several times over the past 3 years.
Any recommendations on brands or must have features other than an inverter? Been out of this for so long and really have no idea what are the good and reliable brands out there now, or what is commonly accepted as must have features.
Budget 2K ( incl installation ) - is that possible?

Yes possible. I bought Hisense 1.5hp non-inverter around RM1.4k including installation before puasa. Inverter model extra RM300+.
panasonic inverter. try ask senheng. sometimes they got good deals. raya sales now. 2 years ago i got a really good deals for 1.5 hp. including installation, its still the cheapest in town at the time. i went to all aircond selling shops.
if u are replacing 1.5hp aircon in open living room like mine, dont need to get inverter type because open living room the air con wont stop blow also.
if non inverter aircon, china brand can get below 1k, japan brand in 1.5k or so.
i am using haier, gooding and at less than 1k price.

invertor aircon only useful if you let it run for long period
How long is long period? Even for 1-2 hours, non-I causes temperature fluctuations as the compressor cuts in and out. Inv airconds will slow down the compressor speed so the temperature is better regulated.

Where is this application ? is this in your bedroom or living room ? how often and how long do you use this ? do you have a ceiling fan in your room ?
i have two 1.5hp units. 1 daikin, another mitsubishi heavy industries. the daikin temperature much cooler than mitsubishi. i bought daikin with wifi function. one disadvantage or that daikin' its remote control lacking timer function. u want to use timer function, u need to use its app. the app used to be free but now u need to pay for annual subscription.
Bought 1 Inverter Pana unit during Lazada Birthday sale. Very gooding price
But after fix brady alloying high pitch sound for the outdoor compressor. Seriously can't live with it. Lucky it's for my kids room and the compressor is high up.
Regret getting the Panasonic, will stick to Daikin even thou the smallish compressor the fans spin quite loud. Better than high pitch noise from the Panasonic.
In my case, yes you can go wrong with the Panasonic.

Was in your same situation and replaced old bedroom unit with the Panasonic XPU 1.0HP three months ago from megacool via online platform. More often than not, use it throughout the night. Was pleasantly surprised to find recent electricity bill has gone down slightly. Besides that, less noisy compared to old unit. In hindsight, probably should have changed earlier.

long enough for the aircon to reach the set temperature
some ppl turn aircon on, when cool enough, they turn it off, they use human sensor instead of the aircon sensor.

You get an underpowered aircon for your living room of course the aircon compressor will keep running. Some people turn on their living room aircon from morning till night, so inverter would be a good choice for them.

Btw why only 1.5hp for an open living room?
bcuz the topic is 1.5hp not 2.0 2.5hp?
also first floor and second floor linked. for what reason you wanna cold down the whole house with a living room air con? when you switch to bedroom just turn on bedroom aircon lo

maybe my first floor is not direct facing evening sun. now my living room thermostat showing 26.3C while i tune my air con to 27C. i can live with that temperature.

I'm asking why you only got a 1.5hp aircon for your living room? Is your living room small? You should get a bigger hp since it's open like you mentioned.
I defer, I have Panasonic, Mitsubishi and Daikin, Daikin much cooler and more consistent, both are the same age. But i have to admit Daikin is abit more expensive from what I was told. Mitsubishi is the one regretted the most, while on auto mode it will shut all fans once it reaches the said temp, will annoy the shit of out you during the night as the fan will consistently go off and on, the Daikin will at least stay on fan one.

sharp is my fav for now.(most efficient) feature packed.
daikin only the flagship can buy which will cost you 1.5x a/c of other flagship. no issues with it other than slightly less efficient compared to my sharp, mistubishi and samsung.
Do checkout our local a/c evoair, its pretty good as a/c. other function not as good as per bigger brands. example aiot functions. Its the first green a/c i installed which requires water connection to the a/c unit.
panasonic is a bit overrated, its not bad. not good also compared to the others

Also see btu ratings esp the turbo mode if you need fast cooling
Good one for 1.5hp something like 12,640 (3,070-14,330)BTU/h Average one like 12,000 (3,070-13,000)

Hmmm- something to consider. Price of the Pana and Daikin almost the same for 1.5HP

Well, so far I tried Panasonic, Daikin, and non inverter Samsung.
I would gladly stay away from Panasonic due to the whistling high pitch noise for the outdoor compressor. But I must say, the indoor unit Panasonic is the quietest.

honestly the best airconditioning unit for own use in the market is Hitachi. The thing with Hitachi is that they, really use high quality products, but sadly they seriously lacking the marketing .
For example when 1600 for Hitachi , almost all is spent on quality alternatively when comes to daikin , they spend 40 % on marketing and kick backs to the dealers. So you see aggressive marketing and promotion even by the installers to meet their 1mil / 2 mil sales target.

Do some research on how inverter AC work and how it save electricity. Pana 1.5hp out of his budget.
I have used national, panasonic, toshiba, mitsubishi, trane, daikin, and sharp AC. Changed all to inverter AC. Currently using 6 AC of mixed brand panasonic, midea, daikin & trane all 5 & 4 stars inverter.
You can install the digital meter to monitor the AC power consumption and see for yourself how and when inverter AC start to safe electric as taught by the below video.
