First ATM machine in Malaysia



Malayan Banking Berhad (Maybank) set up an ATM Machine at its Ampang Park branch in September 1981.


With Maybank, the first bank to provide ATM machines in Malaysia.

However, the ATM machine can only be used by current account holders and visa holders only.

Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) and United Overseas Bank (UOB) began introducing ATM Machines for their current and former savings account holders in early 1982.

At that time, ATM machines were still unable to connect from one bank to another, each bank using a different system.

The HSBC ATM Machine Service at the time was known as the Electronic Teller Card (ETC). HSBC ATM Machine Service is only available from 8.00 am to 12.00 pm. At that time, HSBC ATM cardholders could only withdraw 1,000 Ringgit a day.



UOB ATM Machine Services is operated by its subsidiaries in Malaysia, Lee Wah Bank, and Chung Khiaw Bank. UOB ATM Machine Services is known as Unitellers and plastic cards for Unitellers are known as Unicards. UOB ATM Machine Service is available 24 hours. At that time, UOB ATM cardholders could only withdraw 1,000 Ringgit a day.



Maybank began introducing ATM Machine Services to its current account holders and account holders in August 1982. At that time, Maybank cardholders could only withdraw 500 Ringgit a day
from 9.00 am to 7.00 pm.




The world's first ATM machine was introduced by the Barclays Bank branch in Enfield, North London on June 27, 1967.


Actor Reg Varney who starred in the TV comedy Show On The Buses became the first to make money off the ATM.


2017 was the 50th anniversary of the earliest ATM. Barclays marked the occasion with a new plaque and turned one of their current cash machines gold.



According to the ATM Industry Association (ATMIA), there were close to 3.5 million ATMs installed worldwide.


However, the use of ATMs is gradually declining with the increase in cashless payment systems.
