Hi watch collectors. As I would be travelling again after pandemic, I am interested to know if it would be cheaper to buy a luxury watch in overseas (in England/Europe or Japan) vs same exact model in Malaysia. I know there will be differences in prices due to exchange rate, and some added cost if I were to use CC, but if I could get tax rebated (as a visitor in countries like Japan), would it be cheaper to buy there? Ohh and to be clear this is not the same as buying online from overseas shops, I mean going to the country and physically buying the watch from a shop. I am a noob in this watches thingy so give me your thoughts if anyone have tried. Thanks.

Haha. with modern material and technology, wristwatch nowadays benefit nothing from tourbillon, it's now just for decoration and show off only not sure RM5~8k can buy a tourbillon watches, but you can check Chinese made e.g. Seagull

I've been told to get watch in a small country or city where they are much cheaper.

As long as you don't have to pay the tax at the custom in the airport. Buying goods from overseas usually will be taxed in customs. hell bringing your own personal watches can be taxed when you are travelling abroad with multiple of your watches collections or a very expensive watch. so beware. check this link where Arnold got taxed where he brought his AP watch abroad . https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/01/17/arno...-airport-watch/and check this https://www.channelnewsasia.com/singapore/l...aration-3025986This post has been edited by hxcpride: Feb 22 2024, 06:55 AM

I was considering that for my Hammy too but not knowing if the model I wanted will be instock at the shop when Im there plus my tight schedule meant I missed that opportunity. Just as well the local AD gave me a nice discount upfront which I might not get if i were to buy overseas so cest la vie... This post has been edited by babylon52281: Feb 22 2024, 10:26 AM

That's awesome! i got a couple hammy! love that brand , history and heritage! They're not expensive and you are able to get good discount from local retailer here. So buying locally is still ok. Unless you are buying high end watches. Like most watches i know they cost a lot more in EU especially in UK and Scandinavia. Its so expensive to the point if you are buying your watches in Asia, and move to Europe,..you have to pay all the VAT and count as Import Goods. Tudor black bay 58 cost 5000 ringgit more in Sweden compared to here. so thats one example. I ended up bought my BB58 down here in Malaysia a couple weeks ago. Still in my honeymoon phase. Loving my Hammy as well! My Swede friends annually make summer trips down south ie Italy, Spain, Greece, so if they wanted something cheaper than in Sweden they buy from those countries. Sweden is such a lovely peaceful country and I hope to go again but the winter months there is no joke and the VAT as well!

Yeh its pretty common for Swedes to go to Southern Europe during summer. My fave holiday has been in Italy. Been to few cities and Ate a ton of carbs and gelatos hahah. It's not the just the VAT, i personally paid 32.5% taxes in Sweden hahaha but i dont mind this as the money goes back to the ppl as well....thanks for the tip about buying watches in southern europe though. Next time ill check out some watches in southern europe. Still believe Malaysia cheaper. Winter life is all about Netflix & Chill lmao. Pubs and nightclubs are your bestfriend for the weekends ahhaha
