Their marriage ended eleven years later, but Watts continued to exchange letters with his mother-in-law, Ruth Fuller Everett. In the 1960s, Watts and his wife Mary Jane lived in Sausalito, California. In his later years, he sometimes lived in a houseboat and other times in his cabin on Mount Tamalpais.
Due to societal and economic pressures, he frequently used alcohol to numb himself, which worsened his health.
In October 1973, Watts returned to his cabin on Mount Tamalpais exhausted after giving lectures in Europe. He died in his sleep the following month from heart failure at the age of 58.
