Dear BMW sifu/perminat,

In the midst of searching to upgrade to a larger mid size adventure naked bike next year, I came across many traveller's post on the GS series.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience or could share the upkeep of the bike if I were to purchase it used.

What should I look out for? What are the common issues and wear tear components that is needed to be changed.

Is this a wise choice to purchase used?

Thank you,

alexei

Yes... very smooth, Rotax engine, lasak AF.

left right terbalik (chain, exhaust), so is an oddball, don't kena exhaust burn because this.
21 inch front tyre 90/90 21, can be hard to find.

met a guy who bought this bike model, but had major issues with it, broke down on trips
some ppl have no luck with it, but mostly no issues

Good engine.. Weird crank firing order, so some ppl like/dislike the sound..

It's Tall.. so mind your height and inseam..

The fuel tank is under your seat, to make the weight distribution balance, however, due to the 21-inch front tayar.. will wobble on the highway when above 170kmH (prone to crosswind)

Not soo cheap chain and sprocket, no China-made, only OEM eastern Yurop made.. so put that into the maintenance consideration..

Was supposedly getting this but too tall end up with an RT..

Thanks. May I please check with you whether you know of recommended workshops in KL/PJ that specialize in this model?

I'm not really that familiar with year model of this bike, maybe some personal insights, as to me is more complicated than that:
- main things are frame is ok, then engine, and then the rest of the bike
- how the wiring harness is spliced for accessories, or using standard sockets?
- are all the recalls done?
- what kind of riding the bike used for? always two up with luggage?
- parts replacement history (stator, rectifier, water pump that kind of stuff)

what u plan to use it for? I am think twice, mainly the 21 front wheel puts many ppl off, so let go liao
same engine, F800ST, F800S, F800R etc, can take a look, with the sportier chassis, one of them is belt drive, so pros and cons

about 80% tarmac touring, 20% light offroad (campsites, kampung roads, normal roads) ... nothing super extreme else i will get a scrambler.

A bit uncomfortable for longer tours but Bimmer UDM woh... drool.gif Hahaha... I can live with it.

Since the second hands ones fall between my budget... why not have a look.... beside getting new ones i.e. CFMoto, SRT/Benelli, Suzuki

Actually, BMW's Rotax twins all hv a 360-deg crank I think. Which is why they do not sound like the usual 180-deg crank twins on Kawasakis etc. Even their big boxers have a 360-deg crank.

I'm sorry, you are right.
The boxers seem to have the 180 and because they are flat, the firing interval is 360.
