In the last few days, ktards were gleeful that there was apparently a difference in diplomatic protocol when Singapore PM LHL and Malaysia PM DSAI arrived at Beijing Airport within hours of each other. biggrin.gif Rumours swirled over why Lee was ushered onto a bus while Anwar was shown to a state car at the airport.

The truth is out now! biggrin.gif

Anwar travelled by private plane, a Malaysian Royal Air Force Airbus A319 used for Malaysian diplomats from Hainan to Beijing, and landed at a location where he was met by China's Vice Foreign Minister, Sun Weidong, and ushered into a state car.

Hours later in the evening, Lee travelled by Hainan Airlines (a domestic airline in China) from Hainan to Beijing, and landed in a different location (FOR DOMESTIC AIRLINES) at the airport where he was also met by China's Vice Foreign Minister, Sun Weidong, and boarded a red-carpet lined bus to the VIP lounge, before transferring to a state car. The article noted a red carpet welcome was already accorded to Singapore's Lee days ago in Guangzhou, his first stop in China.

Videos and articles all here:
PM Lee taken to VIP lounge in Beijing before transferring to state car

Malaysian diplomats travel by private plane. I wonder how much does the flight/logistics cost? I thought we are in serious debt??
Singaporean diplomats travel via China's domestic airline. I wonder how much the domestic airfare costs?

Which country spent more money? Who is...dare I say, financially prudent? sweat.gif

Hahaha..you didn't read the news??They are not only a wealthy but also smart country.

1. SG asserts its position as an independent country. (their Foreign Minister didn't call China "da ge'')
2. SG's working language is English, and this is used in all formal occasions.
3. SG used translators (hahahaha) during the meeting despite most SG officials understanding Chinese, so as to have the lead time to think before answering questions.

Hahaha tongue.gif

Proves that Anwar Malaysia don't know Chinese mindset. China mindset is about helping the people on the ground as well. Singapore by using Hainan airlines proves that it is an ally to China.

We are so much better compared to Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe. Yay! biggrin.gif

But Indo is a poor example. Their external debt-to-GDP stands at 42.9% (2020) .
Ours is 82% of GDP. (2023)

Many Msians are just not in sync with reality or that they do not update or apprise themselves of current affairs.

In their heads, Sg is with Israel and the US and anti China.

And that China loves Msia for being surprisingly anti US.

The truth cannot be more stark.

Sg has an almost equally close relationships with US and China and in fact she has espoused an inclusive Pacific with both countries living side by side. There have been hiccups in the relationships as both China and US want Sg to become closer to latter and former. But SG has been deftly maneuvering between these 2 countries - one a Superpower and another - a hyperpower.

Msia has had topsy turvy and confusing relationships with both China and the US. On one hand she wants US investments and her military to counter China in the SCS. On the other hand she doesn't want to be close to the US because of the US-Israel nexus. Meanwhile she needs Chinese investments and money but doesn't want to be dependent on China and really, it hurts because the Malaysian Malay heartland hates anything Cina.

Context is important. biggrin.gif

Unlike Malaysia, much of SG's external debt is because of the debt liabilities in Singapore's banking sector. Foreign depositors and banks put A LOT of money in SG banks, and this counts as debt. This is due to SG's stature as the world's third largest financial centre. Many threads here already discussed this. SG has zero net debt, is a net creditor country, and enjoys AAA credit ratings from Moody's, S&P, Fitch.

On the other hand, Malaysian debt includes loan guarantees to GLCs, 1MDB debt with low revenue base, low tax rates, low oil revenue, huge govt subsidies....you go read up ok? We trail behind Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam in competitiveness, business approvals, digitisation, sustainable consumption.

Isnt the private plane owned by Malaysia? If that plane is used to charter diplomats, why need to spend on commercial airlines instead?

Not sure how big is the Malaysian group. If the plane is half empty, then it isn't very economical.

Another thing is, the plane was parked at Hainan for a few days, and will park at Beijing for a few more days. It will need to pay a fee - unless it gets diplomatic exemption.
