Hi all,
I see there are a few different standards for diagnosing diabetes / pre-diabetes.
1) ADA
FPG: 5.6 to 6.9 = Pre-Diabetic; => 7.0 = Diabetic
HBA1C: 5.7% to 6.4% = Pre-Diabetic; => 6.5% = Diabetic
2) WHO
FPG: 6.1 to 6.9 = Pre-Diabetic; => 7.0 = Diabetic
HBA1C: 5.7% to 6.4% = Pre-Diabetic; => 6.5% = Diabetic
3) Malaysian Clinical Practice Guidelines (issued by MOH)
FPG: 6.1 to 6.9 = Pre-Diabetic; => 7.0 = Diabetic
HBA1C: 5.7% to 6.2% = Pre-Diabetic; => 6.3% = Diabetic
---------------
As can be seen from above, there are 3 different standards with varying cut-off thresholds for diabetic and pre-diabetic diagnosis. Different labs in Malaysia seem to follow different standards. I have seen one following the Malaysian CPG standards, and another following the ADA standards.
1) By law, which standards should Malaysians follow for a diabetic or pre-diabetic diagnosis?
2) Which standards do Malaysian insurance companies follow to classify you as a diabetic patient?
3) Do Malaysian insurance companies consider a pre-diabetic diagnosis, and if so, which standard is followed?
Thanks!
