Malaysia’s leading English daily, The Star will increase the newsstand price by almost 50 per cent from 3rd April, and that’s not an April Fool joke.

Subscribers, shareholders, retirees and former employees are screaming their heads off like going on roller coaster about to trick them that they will fall off.

From a current price of RM2 to RM3 is being called out as ridiculous, unsympathetic and not caring for the older retired generation that subscribe to the newspaper that is declining in sales.

From its heydays in 2008 with over 300,000 in sales, today it has dropped to about 60,000. Sales dropping by about five times is owing to the digital revolution and the younger generation reading the news on the social media which is free.

Orang tua computer illiterate.

Like my parents. I setup a PC with 24in vertical LCD for them to try read e-newspaper (subscription only RM60/year).

After a few days, they gave up. Willing to pay RM2/day for physical copy.

Ur area offer how much for old newspaper?

Few months back, I sent to the used paper collection warehouse, was shocked that the buying price is now 90cents per kg.

It is the glare, sometimes it can be uncomfortable.

For me it is ok, but some of my friends really cannot tahan.

Can try e-ink displays like the kindle or kobo. You can set up Pocket (the read later app) with the kobo. One of my friend likes it another does not, YMMV.

It is like reading on your old 3310.

Sekoah rendah time, buy for tv schedule. Sunday get schedule for whole week can see what movie and cartoon to watch, and plan. Ada pun 3 channel je. Like kids nowadays phone is life, back then tv is life. You plan your daily life around tv schedule.

Sekolah menengah time, buy for Star 2 pullout. Entertainment, fashion, InTech. Dear Thelma usually have hngggh story. University time, buy for actual news. Start caring less about Star 2 content. Start working time, Malaysiakini. That time Anwar just got sacked. Thats when people start to realise mainstream newspaper all jilat, start downfall of newspaper biz, coincide with digital revolution.

Those idiots that scream, what are they thinking? Physical media is free?

Paper, printing, transportation all needs money. The number of distribution has gone down drastically, and that means there's no more volume to distribute the cost, hence price increase is inevitable.

Agreed with the above. Increase price of paper, printing ink + machinery mantainence and staffs' salaries, equally shared among the decreasing readers. Reduce the readers by another half and it'll be RM6/per copy.

I remember wanting to read the star and they ask me to pay for it
totally wtf moment
but the paper one is really terrible
font so fking small and always have to waste material to print it and deliver it
the carbon footprint is definitely higher than online

I read The Star also but I think the increased price comes with doubled pages. Saw there are various new content and different content pullouts to read. Imo, RM3 is still ok for that.

bought the RM3 thestar last sunday, it's thin like half of what I used to get few years back.

Orang tua computer illiterate.

Like my parents. I setup a PC with 24in vertical LCD for them to try read e-newspaper (subscription only RM60/year).

After a few days, they gave up. Willing to pay RM2/day for physical copy.
*
Hv u tried reading an e-textbook for exam purpose?

In the end, everyone will still go back to read physical book.

It's good that The Star now has doubled pages, and this means they have improvised and added their content for us to read.

If they don't have critical content but just panders to the mainstream without nudging Malaysia to a more open society where ideas can be exchanged ... keep on increasing the price, the paper is doomed brows.gif

Don’t you know The Star has different content pullout now? That’s why the price increased.

the question is how the content justify the 50% increment?

My pendapat lah, I think other newspapers do not do like how The Star did currently. Different content pullout like Outdoors, Sports and Pixel.
