Yea each game is different from 1 another. More examples are UT series, Quake series, Doom series, Wolfenstein series, Serious Sam series, Half Life series, FEAR, Soldier of Fortune (d*ck shot ftw lol) and many more. Being an avid FPS fan myself, I dont see how Halo3 is standing out among them, at least from my POV. Im not saying that Halo3 isnt fun to play with. heck i even played Halo and Halo2 on pc myself. My point here is the reputation of that game is larger than the game itself.
UT series - I played UT2k3 religiously last time after i finish my PMR. IMO...UT lost its magic after UT2k4. Strafe jump was also remove in UT3, although there are still wall jump etc but removing that is like removing Halo moon gravity or Quake 3 rocket jump. Not to mention Epic throw too many stuff at the user that it lacks the clean feel of CS,Quake 3 or even Halo that people can have instant fun. Apart from that, the engine kick ass? It works on my crappy laptop.
Quake Series - Quake 3 still the best. I am really hoping it will come to XBLA, just for some easy-in easy-out random fun. Quake 4 onwards are failure. Quake Wars...never play before so no comment. I presume its battlefield-liked?
Doom series - pioneer of FPS? After that it's all crap...that's history anyway.
Wolfenstein series - Same as doom? What's the latest version? Nazi zombie FTW!
F.E.A.R - Wow for awhile...it gets old pretty fast. Especially that little girl and kungfu kick.
Serious sam - Mindless arcade coop fun with lots of lots of monster? That's the only thing it's good at.
Soldier of Fortune - Gore and more gore? Well, i think Gears of War already crown this category. The latest SOF kinda suck.
Half Life 2 - My favourite game too...it's hard to choose this or halo.
If you 'get the whole halo thing' and give it a shot on Halo 3, you will realize actually they pick alot of things from the game above and rojak into one game. One thing Halo 3 dose best is the 4players coop...i have yet to find a FPS with 4 players coop done right.
Do note that the time you play Halo 1 & Halo 2 on pc, it's already a 2-3 years old port...as you knows FPS get outdated pretty fast.

The cult of Halo started when it was first release on Xbox with little to none marketing like what you've seen today, in fact people were dissapointed when they saw the e3 build (pre-release).
Anyway massive hype sometiems does kill people expectation for a game...Sorry, i just finish the singleplayer campaign again. So i am so full of halo now

Do understand abit...

Bungie Favourites - Betcha can't stick it!
