Hi all.

Recently I was assigned to a course in KL for 10 months. Currently live in Melaka. Classes on Tue-Fri, 0900-1200. Tried traveling by car, got stuck in traffic and was late for class. So I rode my RS 150R to class everyday. No problem with RS, fuel consumption is RM 12 to and fro (2 x full tanks).

I am considering to buy a 250 scooter to replace my beloved RS (this year habis hutang). I have 2 options:

New Modenas Elegan 250 EX - RM 17k otr
Used XMax (year 2020) - RM 20k, mileage 12k, upgraded to Akra exhaust and top box, new rear tyre.

Any other suggestions? Priorities are fuel consumption, comfort and maintenance. Thank you

Hi,

I am eyeing 250cc scooter as well and may choose Elegan EX because -

- cheaper in price and ready stock
- comfortable
- cheaper to maintain (only 1 liter engine oil) with no filter needed (same as Honda)
- not attracting attention
- it is Kymco re-badged and Kymco made scooters for BMW, and Kawasaki.

I am not sure if the Elegan is more fuel saving than RS150, but you definitely will have less frequent re-fueling because of the big tank.

Yeah I also did some research and watched YouTube reviews on ME 250, XMax, WMoto, Forza 250. Went to Facebook groups for these scooters too.

Majority of ME 250 owners gave positive reviews. Besides, it's a lot cheaper than XMax and Forza too. I wonder if it can cruise at 120-130 kmh without consuming too much fuel

The Elegan EX can reach 140 km/h but I don't think it will be frugal at that speed (north of 8500 RPM).

I haven't used any scooters before so I don't know how much is the maintenance cost for scooters. I heard people said that scooters u don't have to maintain as much like mopeds (dunno that's true or false).

I do agree with you to not tambah hutang anymore. So if the reasons are strong enough for me not to buy, I will stick to my RS

Scooter need not much maintenance activities such as periodic chain lubricating but the cost to service the CVT is more... Also the tyres are not as common (17") and may have difficulty to find the sizes

There is a compilation of maintenances for 24,000 km for a Honda PCX150, here (click to the page).

It has been discussed in this forum that based on the summary, scooter is cheaper to maintain.

I myself ride Honda PCX, the tyres are easy to source, but may be not as easy as kapchais' 17".

Why not tank bikes? Since you're coming from a clutch bike as well.

Those under modenas like the ns/rs200, or modesaki 250 (z, versys or ninja) or its same category like mt25 or cb250r (but this is 1cyl). since you're doing long distance a minimum of 2 cylinder is preferred.

Take out comfort and you can stick to your RS. No need tambah hutang

The RS is probably also going to be more reliable than any bike you can buy with the same money as the Elegan.

I agree with you. My RS v1 sure is reliable. Never had any problems, cheap maintenance, I've even added 40cm windshield to add some touring feeling to it lol. I wonder how I can reduce the vibration of the ride as I do experience minor fatigues after long rides.

Good choice to go with scooters, both are very good but I am more incline towards X-MAX.

I rode Elegan 150 & Sym 250 - they are the most practical.

Had F800 & K16 before but scooters are always practical and used 90% of the time. They well paid their value few times over

What people didn't tell you the cost of maintenance, CVT Belt, Roller and Clutch/Spring.

You need to change in 10 to 15k km interval.

And the fuel consumption is worst than your RS, might not feel it because the tank is big but if you count the mileage it is consume more petrol.

The only benefit of Scooter are:

1. Comfortable, suspension plusher and weather protection much better than RS.
2. Convenient, auto gear, twist and go.
3. Cargo carrying capacity under the seat and other places.

Design-wise, XMax is more appealing for sure. But for the price difference, it doesn't make sense to me.

I've had many bikes in my 20's but had never owned a scooter. From modenas 100, Ninja 250, CBR 600RR and now RS 150R with a top box, I just want an easy bike that is easy to maintain and not costly

Is that so? For now because of the long distance, I'm using full synthetic EO. From my home to Jalan Tun Razak (about 140km) costs about RM 6 which is almost full tank. Average speed on highway is 110-120 kmh. I wonder how much it costs for scooters.

I don't mind about the storage because my RS already have top box lol

For Honda PCX (scooter), for 140 km travel at that average speed (max 112km/h) would have costed me more than RM8. My full tank is 8 liters.

Wow that's interesting to know. Thanks for the info. So another thumbs down to scooters - increased FC. But that depends on the model for sure

Time to add sidebox and then you can be a wannabe ADV bike hehe

Also as a side note, scooters and automatic CVT bikes have significantly more FC compared to manual bike with same displacement or even higher.

Remember get hand glove (minimum requirement for safety) & kneel protection, motorcycle jacket and jeans for safety (as you travel long distance).

Kapchai with side panniers still not as wide as a big ADV without.

As for HCM, we have traffic jam with bikes. Anything bigger than a kapchai and scooter, really GG.
