Hi Guys,

Wanted to ask some feedback here on which Laptop is better buy for me. Purpose is for mainly for personal MS Office tools, internet browsing, and possibly light gaming.

Option 1 – Acer Laptop with i7-1255U and Intel Iris XE graphics, 16 GB Ram and 512 GB SSD with 15.6 (60 GHZ) monitor for about RM3,500. Warranty is 3-years

Option 2 – Acer Laptop with i5-1240P with NVDIA GTX1650 (4GB), 16 GB Ram and 512 GB SSD with 15.6 (144 Ghz) Monitor for about RM3,800. The Warranty is only for 2-years.

Based on my limited research, i5-1240P with 12-cores performs better than the i7-1255U with only 10-cores and the monitor is 144 Ghz which is better right.

My IT friend told me that i5-1235U will suffice and it cost only about RM2,600 but my current experience with my office laptop which is using a i5-1135G7 (16 GB of Ram) has been a nightmare. The laptop lags under heavy multi-tasking say with 15 files open in the background. Switching between files or saving files can result in the laptop freezing for like 30-seconds.

So I rather pay a bit more for peace of mind. Feedback or input much appreciated.

my unprofessional view:
- 16GB RAM should be more than enough for standard Office file and web browsing tasks, unless you need to do heavy CAD/CAM or photo/video editing on it...
- C drive penuh with junk maybe?
- something else hogging the resources?

Open my task manager and my memory usage without Excel Files with extensive macro is about 45% to 50% but my CPU usage fluctuating between 30% to 60% with apparently certain backgrounds application using up to 50% of my cpu

Operating excel with extensive macros will take the CPU from a 30% to 90% at times with excel using 30% of the CPU

Drive still has 65% capacity out of 256 gb

Memory used is 50% to 55%

Strange things is I did not install anything on my laptop. Will ask my IT

But back to my question, if i do gaming, the i5-1240 is better option but what if I don't game

Any real advantage of the i5-1240 with the 144 ghz monitor over the i7, price increase is not much actually

Just want a good laptop for next 5 years hopefully

Option 2 - Dedicated graphic is always good for gaming.

Your friend nightmare because of RAM is due to he open too many tab browser at the same time. 16 GB RAM is sufficient enough for work and gaming. Laptop won't freezing unless your SSD issue or never defragment on the disk before. Do weekly fragmentation, clean temp cache. This should solved the issue.

Try ASUS Expertbook, Military Test Grade and durability. Usually come with 3 years warranty. Get 512GB SSD and 16 GB RAM. Video graphic just onboard will do.

CPU the more cores and threads the better.

If you are heavy Excel user, then 32 GB RAM is your minimum. I use Excel daily basis with hundred thousand of rows, sometimes millions with formulas/macros. No issue even on AMD 4500U/32GB/1TB SSD.

Monitor your CPU and memory.

Also, clean up your Windows services/start up tasks. There are boatload of these which are unnecessary. Surprisingly, LibreOffice is much stable/faster when opening large Excel files. Sometimes, my Excel seems hang/slow, I just use LibreOffice to view and do minor update before I use back Excel for the main tasks. Also, use dual or triple monitor setup, these increases your productivity a lot. You can open your "slow" Excel in 1 monitor and use the other to continue your other tasks. Of course, the better is tripe monitor, one for monitoring/emails/etc, one for main task and one for 2nd tasks.

From my friend who work in intel that developing the chipset. AMD management is way better than them.
It take longer do finish the project. But the product come with minimum problem. LoL.
Now AMD buy off him from intel during the closing hiring period. Lol
