http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/new...d-790fx-eats-8wYes, the small silver spiky heatsink is all that's needed. nV needs fans, Intel needs heatpipes, AMD apparently think that's obselete. Well, ATI chipsets have always used little power and released little heat, great to hear that they're doing very well on a PCIe 2.0 + HT3.0 chip. So I guess this one won't even need any Thermalright treatment. My next mobo is RD780, unless Phenom really sucks, which I trust it won't.This post has been edited by lex: Oct 12 2007, 03:39 PM

i'd really lik to see this technology transferred to a mobile cpu instead
8W would really be a serious threat to Intel's ULV series (although intel's ULV can go as low as 5W)

Well, this is for the chipset, not the CPU- Intel's better at the CPU itself, while on the chipset side their ones get so hot because of handling the quad pumped FSB, which also went up quite some and went dual since supporting quad cores. Mobile FSBs are slower, and only 1 chipset needs to support the Quad Extreme mobile CPU, so it's not a big deal there.
nVidia... hah. They're just refusing to shrink it, I guess they think they can get away with the 680i/780i duplicate outrage.

But still when overclock need good cooling, so all the heatpipe still necessary.

No- heatpipes are just to inflate mobo pricing. There will be nekked RD790s/780s, see the Abit P35-E for the hotter Intel side, which is just awesome. And BTW, X48 roasts chicken for dinner.

This ATI really tarak paham concept... no heatpipes where got 1337.... 1337 motherboard needs big a$$ coolers regardless.... how can a wannabe-enthuasiast look like a wannabe-enthuasiast without a heatpipe-clad-black-pcb-led-lit-must-have-hardware-cmos-reset-multiple-PCIE lane-bios-page-length-of-encyclopedia motherboard.... Everything else are for boring middle aged people office people

Everything else are for boring middle aged people office people The real 1337 guys do their OWN cooling setup. These new pipes, inbuilt waterblocks and setups seem to be engineered for the poser showoff guy. I'd rather be boring, middle aged and work in an office. I just need 14 years more. (ZING!) Pretty sure the extra money handled correctly can buy me a Bimmer. (I'm also pretty sure that LEDs attract cicaks.)

I remember some review site remove stock heatsink from performance ram and they actually runs cooler without it.
