Firmware 3.80 coming Dec 18th

user posted image

On December 18th, PSP firmware 3.80 will be released in Japan with two new highly desirable features. First is digital video recording capabilities, made possible with the new Japan-only 1seg peripheral. With firmware 3.80, it will be possible to record television shows from the 1seg peripheral directly onto the Memory Stick for later viewing.

Internet radio will also be added in the next firmware upgrade. Exactly how the service will work is unclear at this time.

DVR is a huge feature that unfortunately isn't possible outside of Japan unless appropriate peripherals are released globally. However, internet radio is hopefully something all PSP users around the world will be able to take advantage of. Once again, PSP is expanding its capabilities, becoming more features-packed than anyone could've predicted.

More than 246 million members are registered for the use of this communications software, which enables users to communicate with other Skype users around the world over the Internet. Calls between Skype users are free of charge.

By introducing Skype on PSP, the following features and services will be made available to PSP users:

* Free voice calls between Skype users
* Skype contact list management (view existing contacts, add new ones)
* Skype presence (see which friends are online and available to talk)

Sony intros 16GB Memory Stick Duo

user posted image

Sony's finally getting really, really serious about the Memory Stick. The company is launching a hefty 16GB version of its loved / hated MS Duo. There's not much else. It's a Memory Stick Duo. It's 16GB. It will be available in March for $300. Enjoy.

First Skype PSP Screens, USB Microphone Dated For Japan

user posted image

Look above, it's the first screenshot of Skype running on PSP. It's not much - but does give us an idea of what to expect. Hit the jump for a photo of the USB microphone accessory, which is set to hit Japan on January 24 as a standalone peripheral for 2,500 yen ($23). A two-piece set will also be available on the same day for 4,000 yen ($46). Previously, the microphone was only available for purchase in a bundle package with the UMD game Talkman.

CES 2008: Hands on with Skype for PSP

user posted image

Bad news first: it is only going to be available for Slim and Lite PSP models (2000 series). It is arriving via a free firmware upgrade, so it's not clear how other PSP models will be prevented from having it, but the Sony rep informed me that only the 2000s with their enhanced RAM and processing power are able to run the system.

To all extents and purposes this is the complete Skype package. You can call anyone on your contacts list, no matter if they are on another PSP, a PC, or at the end of a normal phone. For this latter option, you will of course need to purchase Skype Out credit, but that will be possible from within PSP Skype itself.

I tried out a PSP to mobile phone call and was very impressed at the sound quality, although there was a noticeable lag. It wasn't particularly inhibiting though and this is still prototype software. The full version will be rolling out around the end of this month.

As expected, the arrival of Skype PSP will come hand in hand with a brand new PSP peripheral, consisting of a pair of over-the-ear cans, one of which has a small mic arm. There's a picture of it below, but unfortunately not a very good one so apologies for that.

user posted image

Sony also revealed that there's no reason why third party peripheral manufacturers can't start making their own PSP Skype headsets too, so you can expect the usual suspects to start churning them out just as soon as the Firmware arrives.

I quizzed the rep on the possibility of Skype coming to the PS3 and although she couldn't give away anything concrete, it sounds distinctly like Sony is committed to bringing more communications tools to all of its gaming systems, including the PS3. We'll have to wait and see how this fits around the current and future version of its friends management systems though.

I just updated my firmware to 3.90 but sadly there's no Skype function, my guess is the Skype function is for US PSP only.

Yup, only for US and UK PSP at the moment. Even for Japan PSP 3.90 update, does not have the Skype menu.

A new PSP isn't likely to come any time soon. However, that hasn't stopped this designer from making his own concept design. We have to admit, this is really quite attractive. When closed, the unit looks very iPhone-esque, with a sexy PlayStation button that would act like the PSP's "Home" button.

When slid open, the unit reveals a D-Pad, two analog nubs, and the face buttons -- all in a super-slim case. We know it isn't real, but we want it! Perhaps, the next generation of PSP will look something like this.

Red God of War PSP Bundle Coming This Summer

user posted image

Sony just announced the God of War PSP Entertainment Pack at Destination PlayStation, a meeting held between game makers and retailers.

The pack will include a red-colored PSP with a character artwork of Kratos embedded on the back (ala the Star Wars Pack). It will also include God of War: Chains of Olympus, Superbad UMD movie disc and a voucher to download Syphon Filter: Combat Ops on the Playstation Store.

user posted image

The God of War PSP Entertainment Pack will be out in June of a MSRP of $199.99. June will be a big month for Sony since they also announced a Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Playstation 3 bundle at Destination Playstation.

Sony Announces AV Cradle for PSP in Japan

user posted image

Sony continues to come out with some pretty cool stuff for the PSP, and it looks like this PSP Cradle is a must for anyone that uses their Playstation Portable to watch movies. It would be especially handy for those in Japan that can get the 1seg TV signals, which is probably why this is unfortunately launching in Japan only, for now.

The cradle docks the PSP and holds it upright so you don't have to hold it or balance it against something to watch videos, and comes with an IR remote control so you can set back and control the playback without having to get up and press the little buttons on the PSP. The PSP Cradle will also charge the handheld device when plugged in and docked, and optionally comes with AV cables to hook up a bigger scren.

Those in Japan should start seeing this hit shelves on April 24 for ¥6500 (about $60 USD) bundled with the AV cables or ¥4800 (around $45 USD) without them. There was no mention of a release for any other markets at this time.
