KUALA LUMPUR: Internationally-acclaimed Indian composer AR Rahman is set to welcome 60,000 fans at his concert in Stadium Nasional Bukit Jalil tomorrow.

The 8pm concert, AR Rahman — Secret Of Success — Live In Malaysia 2023 is presented by DMY Creation Sdn Bhd, and features a star-studded lineup of Indian artistes to keep the audience enthralled.

DMY chairman and founder Datuk Mohamed Yusoff said that the concert was dedicated to all of Rahman's fans and the superstar dubbed the Mozart of Madras was humbled to be part of the concert.

"His concert has received tremendous support from more than 14 countries including Malaysia, India, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, Thailand, Australia, Sri Lanka and Saudi Arabia.

I heard that many were pissed and disappointed because there were too many Hindi songs.. can someone confirm this?

I never heard this guy’s music, but I think in terms of comparison it’s more accurate to compare to Andrew Lloyd Webber, since he supposedly does more “musical” style tracks compared to JW or HZ who have a more atmospheric “film score” style. I could be wrong though, since I’m not the target market. This is just what my Indian friend told me once.

Me personally, I don't like his style or his genre. He's like a fusion cook. Yes, tasty to take all the ingredients and mix it. Enjoy it. But...

Me personally, I prefer the original original Tamil music. The one with very pure simple chanting and pure voice art. No instruments just pure vocal range. Nowadays very hard to find. All those pure voices shutdown by Western music fusioners like AR.

It is funny that now in the fringe scene, you see some Northern Europeans stealing the original Tamil chanting and pretending it is their music. Groups like H*****g (I don't want to give them free promotion) took instruments like Ravanahatha and Tamil bells and used it together with their pagan chanting and pure vocal preludes and they started to become popular now. So in the end, it feels like if I want to find traditional Tamil music, then I have to get it made by foreigners.

Even BSG stole this technique to sing Gayathri Mantra.

Its not just the western media. I think the crowd and his fan base says it more.

I personally like what he has done to Indian music. His he the best? I don’t think so. But he certainly made an impact. To be honest, I also enjoy the classic Ilayaraja music once in a while. But I think music is like any other art, you can enjoy multiple genres and don’t have to be a cult of one. After all, we don’t eat the same food everyday. You may be an indian, Chinese or Malay, but I’m sure you enjoy other culture food every now and then. The same goes to music. To progress this form of art, you’ll have to open your mind a bit more.

I speak sanskrit. So yes, i do know what is stolen. But I don’t see an issue with it. It was not meant for one kind of people in one place. Religion and culture can be adopted but only culture can be progressed and altered. I’m sure you wear shirt and pants to office and not traditional Indian clothing. And i hope you wear tradition indian clothing to temple instead of shirt and pants.
