If you're already used to German cars, then more or less the same je reliability. If you expecting Toyota reliability, better don't touch.

BMW diesel engine is reliable
but there are still preventive maintenance u have to do

engine usually not the problem
the problem is poor maintenance, improper modification, causing electronic issue, spare part wear out, sensor rosak, etc

For a used car, how to check by non-mechanic background person?
Is this a design failure thing, or once replaced or fixed, follow scheduled maintenance will be good to go in long run?

Dun go alone. There are bmw experts that can follow you for a small fee.

for conti car like merc, audi, bmw, the car need to proper maintaining since the beginning
so i will recommend get a new 1 instead of used, bcos msian is calculative, when come to maintenance, they will always choose the cheapest or even try to avoid...

the cost to replaced/fixed is similar to get a new one...

bmw basically need preventive maintenance as with all conti cars. as long as you baby it, it will last a very long time.

Diesel engine by itself is quite reliable.

Just look out for the pump, injectors, particulate filter and wiring only.

Of course, being a BMW, they added loads of electronic crap to make it unreliable.
