I did a little googling and I don't get why a few blogs fail to like this anime. The anime is a perfect fit. There's nothing that was amiss (i.e. content which were not used). The dialogs too, were good (and lead to the ending, like Kai's advice to Kazuki).
One thing that ticks me though is Mao and Kouichi doesn't really get enough screentime TOGETHER. It's only for a few episodes, the walking to school part, in the house (which she leaves quickly) etc. though you can say this is to portray that Mao loves him.
To quote some users from hongfire "The ending wouldn't be so if Mao never confessed" and I'm glad she did.
How I wish I can find another anime like this (and I have left Anime Shrine for a loooong time). I'm going to watch True Tears now.
EDIT: Kuryuu is WIN
