Any recommended website or physical shops to look for genuine rare brands normally not sold in malaysia?

Do I have to worry about servicing?

like what is uncommon in your books? and what is your budget too

if you're talking reliable and uncommon, you can check out red army watches in pavi (and their websites). they bring in stuff like laco etc etc uncommon watch brands and microbrands. usually ranges from 1k+ to 10k+

if you're talking independent, those are another different world, you're talking akriva, FP Journe, Ophion, etc. those either you fly to their boutique in another country or you can call them up and see if they wanna take your order (very likely as i have positive experience from this).

i was thinking of getting my dad a watch for his birthday next year
planning it now

i am guessing you mean brands that are:

1) boutique limited run from microbrands, craftsmen, and small shops
2) decent big brand but not brought into malaysia

there was a russian one i can't recall the name my friend showed me
looks very nice indeed
worry if i can get a genuine one and if i need to repair/service can it be done here

ETA/SW are mass produced/adopted movements that are easily serviceable everywhere

nothing truly rare...while the truly rare is too expensive.

anyway, can look thru gnomon singapore...
get a microbrand with good customer service...so anything under warranty obviously easier to cover.

and u don't want them to use some little known china movement etc...end up waiting months for parts or not serviceable etc... sounds like p1...

Gnomon comes to mind. But it's still based in SG, so not too bad.

Another one is Red Army Watches? I remember they had a boutique in Bangsar Village. They also carry a lot of the smaller and niche brands

Itaynoy stands out for me.

can i assume movements from japan are alright? any good websites for me to read up and check on movements?
usually i see model numbers but i can't make heads or tails of it.

I have this Aristo 3h80 flieger watch. It's a pretty uncommon brand, Aristo (different company) name is known for coffee machines in Malaysia.

However in Germany it's a well established watch brand hailing from Pforzheim. I bought it off ebay for something like 150 USD.

It's a solid Ronda 515 quartz watch, very basic. It's just that I like flieger watches and already have another Laco.

a commonly known Russian brand would be Vostok.

if you're looking at micro brands, following are some decent ones:
1. Junghans
2. Sinn
3. Baltic
4. Dan Henry
5. Lorier
6. Spinnaker
7. Yema
8. Zelos
9. Christopher Ward

Also, you might want to consider the type of watch that your pop would love; such as:
1. Diver
2. Dress
3. Flieger
4. Military

Hope the above helps.

then consider brew watches as someone posted. one of the better built microbrands out there.

boldr, brew, Rze, balic, all crazy good brands. priced at 2-4k.
