Just don't do anything. Your boss's boss may not like him for whatever reason.
Your action may just make things worse (ie. going against the boss's boss direction if he really dislikes your boss).
Just give your own appreciation (ie. meal, gift, card, etc) to your direct boss will do in my opinion.
