I remember earlier in this thread someone asked what'll a Xeon + Quadro performance index will be :
Haah....this is mine and this is very-very bad for a Xeon machine.

What's wrong with the RAM ?
Can anynone tell ?

Anyway....the machine is a Dell Precision 690 and came with Windows XP Pro.
Tested install Vista 64 (not ori one) just to look at the index.
Installed Vista due to change in HDD config (the index subscore result for the HDD is for 4x250GB HDD Raid-Stripping)

Will use this Vista installation for 2/3 more days and back to XP. Enuf playing and work...work...work.

Note:

Ah...this post should be in "What is your Windows Vista score" thread.
This is all about how to....

Zomg...I like your rig...the reason for the low score is probably the ram speed? ECC available?

ECC ? I think so. Looking at the Dell invoice, yes the ram is as standard, 2GB.

Anyway...I'll be formatting the pc agn 2moro, installing the original OS, XP Pro.
My Autodesk Viz (and one of my favourite the plugin) misbehave !! Viz alone works fine.

BTW what about the ECC ? Bad ?
AND while looking at ECC definition and meaning (hampeh, tak faham !), found DDR 2 channel, 3 and 4 channel.

More acronyms....need to ask Dell's tech support, senang skit. Baca tak faham. rclxub.gif

Got any tips for me ?

ECC gives you more stable and accurate but there's a tradeoff in terms of speed with the extra cycles for verifying data.

More or less have the same index as mine except my Quadro card is filled with corrupted memory now sad.gif

ECC is an error verification feature that goes through any bits and bytes of information stored in the memory for error. Dell workstation have ECC RAM as standard.

Right.....nice score. BUT did not reflect the "feel" when using the pc.

This is what I felt (yesterday, 2day the machine is back on the ori OS - XP Pro) :

1. Soooo slooooow

2. Sluggish performance on a most basic application (basic app that comes with the OS and suppose to execute well in 64 bit environment). Eg. Notepad (loading timed @almost 7 seconds, almost instantaneous on XP Pro), Firefox 2.0 with few plugins and standard theme (6 seconds, not more than 2 seconds). Even Start Menu (not the main start menu, but the All Programs part, I can see the spinning circle for almost 2 seconds then menu appear). All times guna cheap stop watch sahaja. Testing with the stopwatch just to prove the "slow feeling)

3. Installed (pirated from my daughter's college copy - ORI) Photoshop CS2, damn....create new document took almost 10 seconds !. Hah, I'm sticking to my old version 5, sufficient for my need.

ASSUMPTION :
Vista 64 is a stable and well-behaved OS

MOST PROBABLE CAUSE :
Test using pirated version. Need to read more un-biased reviews, then may decide to change to 64 permanent.
But why ? Is it because of the number 64 ? Just like trying to get higher MHz on a CPU, disregarding other factors....
( whistling.gif thinking-out-loud)

ps. MY opinion only.
