PETALING JAYA: Pejuang chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad has expressed gratitude to the voters who supported him in the general election (GE15), saying they should not lose hope.
The former prime minister lost in his bid for re-election in Langkawi at last Saturday’s polls, obtaining only 4,566 votes and losing his deposit. Perikatan Nasional’s Suhaimi Abdullah won the contest with 25,463 votes.
“I am honoured by your spirit, bravery and rejection of corruption shown by voting for me under the Pejuang-Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) banner.
“I would like to thank all of you once again for voting for me. Please believe that our small number does not mean that our struggle is over,” Mahathir said in a statement.
He said he hoped the voters who supported GTA were not saddened by the election results and would continue to fight for the principles the coalition stood for.
Mahathir and his son, Mukhriz, standing under the GTA banner, were among the 369 candidates who lost their deposits in the elections last Saturday. He and Mukhriz won less than one-eighth of the votes in Langkawi and Jerlun.
