Hi guys,
Looking for some pointers here. Installed my spare SSD on a caddy tray - meant for the DVD/ Blue Ray slot.
When running the Samsung Magician Software, it is showing as SATA 3 is available.

Interface:
SATA 2 (3GB/s)
SATA 3 is available

Seriously, royally confused.
Does that mean that the DVD/ Blue Ray slot is actually a SATA 3 slot?
But then, the caddy tray is running on SATA2?
Then, i need to replace the caddy tray to SATA 3?
Looking forward to your feedback.

Samsung 870 EVO can support all SATA 1,2 and 3 speed.

How is the ssd connected to the motherboard? is it directly via a sata cable from the SSD into one of the mobo's sata slots?
what mobo is it and check the manufacturer spec if the sata slot you connected is SATA 3.

The SSD is connected via caddy tray - meant for the original DVD / Blu Ray slot.
This is a spare SSD.

sata for optical drive usually capped at at most sata 2

if software says sata 3 available is means that motherboard controller support sata 3

but the port for optical drive is different from the port for HDD/SSD. use slimline protocol which most laptop makers will capped at sata 2 because none of optical drive can make use of that speed

the problem is that slimline port bottleneck the speed. no other workarounds sadly

Too bad and you won't be able to fully utilise the speed of your SSD as the port connected to it has been capped by the manufacturer. You can log in into BIOS and check if it capable to allow you uncapped it or not.

By the way, this topic should be posted in Hardware section.

your system is a laptop or desktop?

check the motherboard spec and see if the sata connections are sata 2 or 3.

I believe you're using Samsung 870 Evo SATA SSD 2.5". If yes, you don't have to border about SATA 2 or SATA 3 because your 2.5" Samsung 870 Evo SATA SSD is max speed of 560 MB/s and SATA 2 is capable of supporting speed up to 3 GB/s. Your Samsung 870 Evo SATA SSD is currently running around 20% of the max speed of SATA 2.

dont confused GB vs Gb
SATA II is a second generation SATA interface, and it runs at 3.0 Gb/s
that is 375MB/s in the best case scenario..

One is bandwidth and one is throughput. It is different thing.

SATA I (revision 1.x) interface, formally known as SATA 1.5Gb/s, is the first generation SATA interface running at 1.5 Gb/s. The bandwidth throughput, which is supported by the interface, is up to 150MB/s.

SATA II (revision 2.x) interface, formally known as SATA 3Gb/s, is a second generation SATA interface running at 3.0 Gb/s. The bandwidth throughput, which is supported by the interface, is up to 300MB/s.

SATA III (revision 3.x) interface, formally known as SATA 6Gb/s, is a third generation SATA interface running at 6.0Gb/s. The bandwidth throughput, which is supported by the interface, is up to 600MB/s. This interface is backwards compatible with SATA 3 Gb/s interface.

SATA SSD can maximize it's speed only if using SATA 3

SSD read and write depends on the files thought so does SATA2/3 matter?

dont quite get you. do you mean the files decide the speed of transfer?

As i know, atleast on my old pc that only SATA 2, if copy, move single large file on SSD
Avg 200MB/s, but if multiple file even large size speed will not maintain, 100Mb/s, or lower

If is HDD, less that 100MB/s for single large file, multiple large file will less that 50MB/s, 30MB/s

Single large file mean 1 file over 1GB, 2GB
Multiple large file mean over 100, 200 file, total 1GB size

Most of the time, SATA2/3 doesn't matter for general users with an SSD.
Most of the things we do on computer ends up with relatively small files anyways.

only if you regularly use files in hundreds of MB and above, will you really feel the difference between SATA2/SATA3... such as playing large complex fancy games, video editing, downloading movies (and moving them around)...

thats what they are saying...

i believe Samsung Magician means that the SSD is SATA3 capable but is running at SATA2 speeds.

What motherboard/system are you using?
Both system and device has to support SATA3 for SATA3 operation. If either one doesn't support SATA3.. then it drops down to the next level.

If both system and device are supposed to support SATA3, but isn't running so... check your SATA cable, it could be a bad cable, either bad quality or worn out.
Or are you using a super long SATA cable when a short one will work? (longer cables mean weaker signal)
Such things does happen.
