Hello. I would like to remove the HDD and add a SSD. I'm not very familiar with the market prices and I only know that laptop parts are definitely more expensive than desktop. I will include my budget but please tell me if it's realistic/need to add more.

Laptop: Lenovo Legion 5i 15-inch
SSD size desired: 500GB, 1TB
Budget: RM500 for 1TB (see no.1)

My questions are:

1) Is RM500 budget realistic for 1TB? Or need add more?

2) What are good options for 500GB and 1TB?

2b) I have slots for 2.5" SATA and M.2. From my laptop specs I can only use one or the other. Is there a difference if I use which in terms of price and performance?

3) Safe to self-install or better let a pro handle it?

Thank you.

1) Is RM500 budget realistic for 1TB? Or need add more? - more than enough for 1TB

2) What are good options for 500GB and 1TB? Kingston NV2. can get around RM350 at shoppee

2b) I have slots for 2.5" SATA and M.2. From my laptop specs I can only use one or the other. Is there a difference if I use which in terms of price and performance? - NVME M.2 is usually faster than 2.5' Sata

3) Safe to self-install or better let a pro handle it? - if you're not confident to do it, pay some one to use it. but usually can search for guide video in youtube.

Things to consider:-

If you really want to see ur NB fly... use SSD as boot drive with Windows installed. You might need professional help if you're not familiar with install new Windows.

Since you're getting a new SSD, get the M2 one... but need to check ur NB use NVME or SATA interface. Cannot swap. You can configure BIOS to make the M2 as bootable drive (see above)

If you dont store GBs of data at one go (e.g. 4K video editing, AutoCAD, etc...) using a no-cache (DRAMless) SSD is OK.

Some SSD come with 3 years warranty and some with 5 years. My preference is 5 years for my piece of mind.

Hello. I'm a lenovo 5 (AMD) user.
Please get respected brand for your nvme.
I suggest to get Samsung SSD 970 EVO if you can.

I have problems with Silicon Power 1TB NVME (Was good on my old Acer laptop).
The problem is ,
1) when you transfer large amount of data > 10gb, it will hang half way. Then if you restart the computer, the drive is not detected. To repair this you need to do hard reset.
2) If you're gonna use it as your boot drive, it wont get detected.
3) If you update window, it will also stuck at bootloop. (hard reset to bypass this.

Or maybe my luck is bad with the drive.

For 2b, normally you can use both slots unless the 2.5 slot is covered by the battery...

With Intel chip in your 5i, assuming it’s 11gen n above like mine , you can add Samsung 980 Pro with pcie 4 support, huge boost to the read write speed
