I have a cheap Hisense "non-smart" 40N2176P tv. It does have built in media player that can play x264 video files. Today, I try to play a x265 mp4 video file (low bitrate 720p type) on it. Surprisingly, it can play.

I always thought x265 decoding is quite cpu intensive, or at least need a capable chipset to do it.

How is this possible? hmm.gif

No x265 is just a more compressed mp4. If your tv can play mp4 u should be able to play it.

I have an older Samsung TV (probably 2018 or 2019), is also able to play x265. However if you do high bit rate HEVC, then it may stutter randomly.

Most somewhat "modern" TV will have the ability to playback HEVC files, granted not all TVs has the power to playback high bitrate/HDR10+/DV files or the ability to, but as long as your TV is 2015 or newer, it 'll mostly have the build in HEVC decode module in the SoC for it.

GPU Usage of 4k HEVC DV 16Mbps

GPU Usage of 720p HEVC 2Mbps

See Video Decode tab
