your question seem not logic.

i assume, this is an external application.
To detect from public ip connection.

So if Router/switch down, your server = off grid = offline.

So.. you dont need an application, just sign up PINGDOM, i remember is free. ping your server every x min. if no response = alarm you.

2nd. If ther is an internal APP...
Thats going to be very very tricky...
It can detect the switch is down, eg server lose LAN connection
But how the APP going to tell you?

* Switch down= LAN down = almost everything down

Thanks Ifourtos, do you mean ? https://www.pingdom.com/

Assuming there are thousand equipment that we need to know their status, is pingdom still a good app to help ?

you brought a good point, if we develop an external app, could it be easy to detect all equipment for a data center ?

Appreciated your patience, i don't have much knowledge in networking smile.gif

a quick search in youtube will have alot of explanation about this. It's a widely used standard that comes built in in a lot of equipment with networking function, there are tons of open source/free solution that are readily available, of course you can write your own interface app as well, it all comes down to what you objective is.

I don't think anybody that's need to write a program to do what you want to do will ask here.

You can try to use cacti, https://www.cacti.net/
