Amazon to close Book Depository online shop
QUOTE
The online shop Book Depository is due to close at the end of April, vendors and publishing partners have been told. This comes after the bookseller’s parent company Amazon announced it had decided to “eliminate” a number of positions across its Devices and Books businesses.

The Gloucester-based bookseller was founded in 2004 by Stuart Felton and Andrew Crawford, a former Amazon employee, with the mantra of “selling ‘less of more’ rather than ‘more of less’”. It aimed to sell 6m titles covering a wide variety of genres and topics, as opposed to focusing solely on bestsellers. While originally a rival to Amazon, it was acquired by the retail giant in 2011, causing some in the publishing industry to worry about the tightening of the American company’s “stranglehold” on the UK book trade.

According to the trade magazine the Bookseller, an email sent out to vendors and publishing partners explained that Book Depository will be closing, and that the last date customers will be able to place orders is 26 April. “Over the coming weeks we will complete a winding down of the business, including discontinuing our listings as a marketplace seller and closing our website,” Andy Chart, head of vendor management, wrote.

“I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you, from everyone at Book Depository and our book-loving customers, for your supportive partnership over the years in helping us to make printed books more accessible to readers around the world,” he concluded.

This is first and last time I bought from BD. It's devastating news I just hate it to happen. 😣😭

Not this year, quite a long time ago, maybe 4 years. Took quite a long time, 1 month plus. If you really want to save few bucks can go ahead.

When i bought my books, by the time they arrived I already lost interest. Might as well have spent the extra RM15 (in my case) and get it in a few days.

I've bought from them occasionally. It normally takes 2-3 weeks for them to deliver to M'sia.

Anyone here have bought books from Book Depository this year?
How long does it take before it reached you?

Currently I'm eyeing on one copy with 24% discount on it. Price at Kinokuniya way too high for my liking BD has the best offer. But I have never bought anything from there.

I have. If you wait you can even get it for extra 10% off. Book depository frequently throw out 10% coupon in their email. You can consider wordey and better world books. Better world books if you don't mind 2nd hand books. Price can be cheaper than book depository. For me, I will always pick the cheaper options.

Couple of months was the longest
Average was a little under a month

It will come don't worry. Price and availability of certain titles is the main draw for me

I've updated the first post.
Not available at Wordery but price at Better world books $21.76. Way too expensive compared to BD. Same with Amazon prices similar with Kinokuniya.

When will BD release this 10% coupon? I'm afraid the price will shoot up increase again later as I noticed they always changing them every few days. Last night the price of the book was RM65.89

If buy from US publishers will delivery take around 2-3 weeks as well? There's no UK publisher for the book I want.

If it's in stock in their fulfillment centres then it should take the same time regardless of where its publish. What does it say on the website with regards to availability?

You need to subscribe to them for promo. You can wait for black Friday. Usually some got some discount then.

For me, whoever give me cheaper price (BD or better world books) I will buy from them.

Another reason is our weak RM. sad.gif

I bought from them quite often before this year. Usually the delivery will take around 1 month to a few months. The longest time I'd waited was about 2 months plus. Sometimes, the books will be sent separately if the stock is at different fulfillment centres so you may not get all at once.

The thing I like about BD is that they will send you another copy without issue if you make a report that you haven't received it after a long period of time, for e.g. 2 months. There is a standard procedure that you have to do and things to check on your side though.

They used to have the 10% promo for all books for Malaysia customer about 2 or 3 times a year but I think they'd lessen the frequency of it for the last 2 years. But they still have 10% promo for selected books or categories every now and then.

Then the availability shouldn't be an issue. But you probably need to be prepared to wait around 1 month+. In my previous experiences, their books are rarely delivered on time. But that was quite some times ago. It may have gotten better these day.

Does all books on BD already available at their warehouse like Kinokuniya or do they need to ship from US if the book publisher was from US?

I have no idea how BD operated.

I always buy from them whenever the price is right.

Fastest was around 2 weeks, slowest around 6 weeks. If they ship the wrong book, they would ask you to just keep the book (probably only for cheap ones) and send you the correct copy.

The most important thing is, shipping is free thumbup.gif

I actually don't mind paying abit more to expedite my shipping actually. Some titles they carry cant find locally or in Singapore. But I heard they have another fulfilment centre in Australia now so maybe things might be faster for us in MY

I don't know how they operate but I think there is some sort of warehouse+fulfillment centre because all my orders are shipped from the UK despite the publisher being from other country. Plus, there are some books listed as "Unavailable" on their website so it seems they do operate in a way where they will keep their stock somewhere.

Normally for generic discount they would have mastercard or visa 5% discount. But I don’t know if now that code is still valid or not.

It took like a month for my last Harry Potter book to get here from the UK. It was alright except they removed the plastic so the book came naked in their cardboard case which is kinda eh since I just bought it for my personal collection since all my original hardcovers went missing or just broke in half (literally) from too much reading.

My last month purchase from Kinokuniya was nearly 4 weeks as well. They had to back order the book I wanted from Japan it's very rare old title most online shops in the world all Out of stock.

This one is newly release last May but I noticed all books by the same author sold here at least RM90+ excluding shipping. Crazy expensive. shakehead.gif

If you're lucky - few weeks. But on average more like 6 - 8 weeks, especially these days. Contact them after 3 months if still no sign, but you'll eventually get it one.

You'll remember when they send you email asking if you received the thing or not lol

It hurts when I keep been reminded about our shitty currency. I'm really annoyed when Mat salleh on YouTube saying 'Hun,it just $18 you've gotta have it.'
They think everyone who's watching their channel are all richfag coming from first world countries can always afford expensive hardcopy books. sad.gif

I just proceeded it last night because yes it's the best deal I could get in next few weeks or months it's gonna back to original price like others. $18-$20 is a lot of money when converted back into RM.

Damn it the price just dropped again today to RM63.16 which is around RM31.74 difference with Kinokuniya price.

It's very tempting to buy now.

So far all my books arrived safely in one piece.

QUOTE(ian_zero @ Nov 3 2022, 08:54 PM)
Then the availability shouldn't be an issue. But you probably need to be prepared to wait around 1 month+. In my previous experiences, their books are rarely delivered on time. But that was quite some times ago. It may have gotten better these day.

If your ordered from Book Depository, you need to be really patient. Mine arrived within 3 weeks-1 month

The price is just slightly cheaper. But depends on the genre of the book. Sometimes i dont feel worth waiting so long so i rather buy the book directly at bookstore

Just received my book today OMG. Dispatched on 8th November I expected it to arrive around mid next month. Although the envelope already been opened (update pics on first post).

I might buy again from BD.

That was fast. Nice.

So far, mine was never opened. I guess there's a first for everything. Luckily, it arrives safely without damages.

Hi just wondering did you guys pay using paypal or credit card ? I am thinking of purchasing from book depository and a bit cautious about using my cc.

I don't mind waiting ... some of the titles aren't available at our bookstores.

I paid using BigPay. Since still got balance in it plus with its prepaid card function I can control amount of money going in and out.

Good luck. My first purchase received after 2+ weeks hope yours will arrived early as well.

Can use PayPal, but not in RM. Have to switch to different currency if you want to use PayPal. If you already have some non-RM balance in the PayPal account, still ok la. If you use your card to pay in RM via PayPal, the exchange rate not that favourable, iirc.

At least if you use cc, you can dispute the transaction with the bank.

BigPay also can.

I've received one of the books that I ordered on the 19th yesterday. No one rang the doorbell just found it in my mailbox.

I hope it won't take too long for my other book to reach my doorstep.

Great to hear. 👍
Yes it's a relief to see the delivery period is getting shorter here to Malaysia. I plan to make more purchase in BD in the future.
Before this I was skeptical because many people said they only received their books after 4-5 weeks standard.

DAMN, DAMN DAMN

OMG.

I have no idea what other alternative that I can buy besides the book depository. I tried to buy directly thru Amazon but it seems like I can't proceed with payment and they always blocked me

This is a sad news to be honest. Our local bookstores are not helping and the book title is not widely available compared to Book Depository. cry.gif cry.gif

Amazon JP? My cc no problems used on Amazon US but for JP they rejected all 3 cards until one user here suggested to use prepaid card like BigPay instead. Baru dapat payment accepted around 20 minutes.

Just helped my friend using BigPay also to buy her books at Amazon JP but all went smoothly.
If you have any prepaid card try use it instead of bank cc.

Any good alternative?

I only know
Amazon
Wordery
Betterworld books

Amazon may need forwarders as the price is expensive if using Amazon own shipping.

None of these are even close to what bookdepo can offer. It's a sad day for a lot of us.

A better alternative would be Amazon sg. U can save more on postage

Btw, planning to do purchase. Looking for artistic violent manga with gore and blood, nudity is a bonus (eg Gantz)

Any recommendation?

I have Chainsaw Man in my cart.
I have Starving Anonymous in my cart

Of course not. One title RM99.90 at normal bookstores now BD selling at only RM51.91 that's almost 50% discount. https://www.bookdepository.com/Mythographic...72044530&sr=1-5

I dislike Amazon Singapore because books I want there all super expensive compared to local Kinokuniya and Amazon JP even includes the shipping fees. Also Kinokuniya can help back order some old and rare titles from their suppliers which is a plus to me.

The list is suggestion. Search compare then buy your favourite books from whatever shop that can offer the best prices.
