Microsoft has announced its competitor to Google Docs & Spreadsheets: Microsoft Office Live Workspace. Rather than offer a web-based version of all of its office products, Office Live Workspace will be an extension of Microsoft's leading desktop applications for word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software. The feature will allow people to store and share documents from Microsoft Office online, allowing users to access their files from anywhere and collaborate on them with others.

While optimized for Office 2007, Windows Office Live Workspace will support documents created in OpenOffice and StarOffice, as well as Office XP. It will also allow users to share their contact lists and calendars from Windows Live.

If you're interested in trying out Office Live Workspace, you can currently sign up for the beta. The service will be free to use, though will initially include a limit of up to 1,000 files.
