I keep seeing chromebook or refurbished laptops on Shopee that sells at a cheap price. Are those reliable? Will people put any sort of malware in it?

I been thinking about getting a new laptop for a while, no need high end stuff. As long as I can perform daily task like Microsoft word..watch movies etc.

I bought the Lenovo N22 Chromebook from Carousell.

Overall not bad but painful slow. Plus, the majority already no longer supported by Google. RAM and SSD soldered onboard and cannot be upgraded.

Im using 2in1 laptop, dual boot with chromeos.
For a celeron laptop, chromeos definately faster than windows.

I also was in same dilemma as you.

Ended up getting Honor Magicbook at sub 2k.

Best decision ever.

I own a Chromebook.

You need to go through alot of hoops if you want to make the best of it; i.e. install Android apps.

It's okay for basic tasks but nothing still beats a good old Windows/ Mac laptop.

Not to mention that storage is very limited and it's near useless without Internet connectivity.

I was just window shopping, but some are pretty decent. I found one, Lenovo, and it's like RM300 something

Maybe some of both. Buy a used laptop and install chrome OS.

Get one that can run android apps, newer ones from 2014-2015 onwards.
Test battery health on Crosh Ctrl + Alt + t - type "battery_test" I wouldn't take one below say 75-80% health.

You can buy a new chromebook at about RM600. With a touch screen.

Edit: personally, I think it is much better value than the B40 tablets the government is providing.

If you have basic hardware, software knowledge then yes because often need self service and maintenance.

I thought of making my old laptop as Chromebook but went with Linux route instead.
