Which antivirus s/w eat the less of our memory ram and their virus patterns which one get more updated?

What is the differences between the free edition and the one the need to pay one? I heard my friend said the free edition one won't work the 100% help the pc clean up and the pay one they can do more better than the free one, is that true?

I personally using F-sucure for windows Vista now. They gave me a 180days trial. Previously downloaded it from their website, not sure whether is it still free now. U can go to f-secure to take a look if you interested.
