you can always change the color settings and vibrance in NVidia Control Panel. Your friend already bought the thing so just help him/her adjust the color settings to be more vibrant as what you claim. 
i thought 8600gt and 8600gts using same chip??it just 8600gts got higher clock only...other than that, both are same... You need to compare apple with apple, then its fair.
