8600GTS and 8600GT is not totally the same and not too distance in terms of differences either. Before you jump to conclusion, have you tried Colorful 8600GTS for that matter. Maybe its just this model is defect but others may not, who knows. 
You need to compare apple with apple, then its fair.
you can always change the color settings and vibrance in NVidia Control Panel. Your friend already bought the thing so just help him/her adjust the color settings to be more vibrant as what you claim.
