Tamron AF 70-300mm F4-5.6 Di Macro, I am still considering to buy this lens comparing to the Canon 70-300mm USM something similar to subject, similar price too.

Im worried that, after buying this lens, i would need to buy external flash for indoor events to take telephotos.. Dam... But i love photos with the original ambience feel, so...

The problem is,let's say F4 will be at 70mm, and f5.6@300mm, if i were need to use 1/15 ~ 1/20 ISO 400 @f5.6 300mm, that will be bad bad bad... coz no IS in this lens... the pic will look blurry. Im worried about this matter, and im a hater for high ISO.

Is there anyone using this lens? Can i have a review of it? and sample of pictures taken using this lens? Need advice pls. coz im considering of getting either a Battery Grip, Telelens, Or a 430ex. I currently have the budget for one item only. If this telelens is not worth the price being paid, i dun mind to save more and get a 70-200mm L lense which will cost me a BOMB!!! haha...

So please please enligthen me all tamron users out there...

a DSLR is never complete without a flashgun!
well u can consider getting EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM if u got de budget hehe

but i recommend u get a flashgun, 2nd hand will do. I bet u will need it more than u might think of...dun forget flashes can create better ambience feel for u if u know how to master it.

i've used canon EF 90-300 USM before, and now i'm using the sigma, bought it 2nd hand for around RM500, AF wise, lose to canon's own USM lens, and hunts a lot in low light, but image quality is good compared to the budget canon tele lens.. if u can afford the canon EF 70-300 IS USM, then by all means go ahead.. remember it was around RM2k.. the rest of the canon budget zoom(75-300/90-300) are just so-so...

thanks. sigma equivelant comes to around the same price too. smile.gif

the only thing i didn't like about sigma is that after long / heavy use, it may peel like snake changing skin. (yes, i've seen pics of it before).

Would agree with kwws here bro...
You're not complete if you don't have a speedlite..
If you're getting any telephoto zoom lens and worried that you can't shoot indoors,
then get the 580EX II as well!
It might cost 600+ more than the 430EX but always better to have enough light than too little light
Haha my humble opinion

haha.. nice to see, nice to hold, once started peeling, then u cry loh..
it does feel better than my ex-90300mm..
the only problem is the coating is not lasting, seen too many cases of peeling..
anyway, read some where about "cracking" the sigma 70-300 so the macro would work below 200mm, hands itchy, so i tried it, and it worked..
now i can focus @ 95cm away from the subject @ all range.. rclxms.gif
but try it at your own risk lah.. haha

if u're really tight on budget, 430EX also can do the job lah... later when u have spare cash only u upgrade, or get the 580EX II as main lah, then the 430EX can use as spare wireless flash.. summore the extra cash that u save from buying the 430EX now can get u the tamron/sigma lens already..

IMO I think the 430EX will do just fine. Im hunting for one now too, cheapest I've seen is rm1030. Hardly find a speedlite in garage sales, Ive been waiting for quite a while tongue.gif

Lol.. yeah... i have also seen RM1000+, nothing below than that...

I normally shoot something if i want to shoot them.. LoL.. The only thing i like about speedlite is that a diffuser can be put on it.. so that the flash will not be that harsh on the object that u are shooting... i also use a lot of fill in flash in photography.. Telelens is also something i would like to have, i think mostly to shoot indoors.. i wanted to go pavilion runway show, the only thing which stopped me from going is that i dun have a telelens, so i ended up not going.. what a waste...

Yah same thing, but tele lens isnt exactly a necessity.. more like a luxury wink.gif which i'd like to haf one day when im richer tongue.gif Anyways gotto agree i like speedlite becos of that too, to avoid too much 'oily' effect on portrait shots especially hehe.

The 70-200mm F2.8 L IS Would be more than RM5K. Never heard about it peeling but its the fav lens to have for Canon Users. Provided budget permits. If not the 70-200mm F4 L IS @RM4K is good as well.

I was looking for the flashgun as well. THe hefty price is still bugging me.

AF70-300mm: without IS and at an apeture that starts at F4, It would definetly pose a problem for you shooting indoors. lots of motion blur or you'll have to kick up the ISO.

may i introduce u to Photomalaysia forum or the Free Trade Zone
i think u got better chance to find a used 430EX or 420EX or 580EX or maybe the older 550EX there...
grey sets are going around 850-1000 if i'm not mistaken, around the price of a used set..
got mine few months ago with an original stofen omnibounce for RM850.. smile.gif

Hi derek87,

I just got my Tamron 70-300mm lens yesterday. The main reason why i purchased this lens is because of the price. Yes, if you have the budget, by all means go and get other lenses, but if budget is a main concern, then i think this lens is a good buy. The moment I got this lens, I went to test it out at Zoo Negara. The images are shown below. By the way, I'm still getting the hang of this lens. I havent tested the lens indoors but whatever the outcome is, I'm sure I dont need this lens as much for the indoors compared to outdoors.

I spent RM650+RM45 on Hoya UV filter for protection. Bought it at YL Camera (Desmond), Pudu Plaza. Browse around if you have the time and effort around KL. You might get cheaper but I think their price is competitive enough, plus they have used lenses for sale as well.

oh btw this Tamron lens was rated 80% in one magazine. The Sigma rated 84%, highest among the lost. Still better than Canon's offering.

Too bad I don't remember the magazine name. they were comparing budget Tele lens.

the only thing good about canon budget tele lens is they focus slightly faster, and less hunting..

the same for my sigma as well.. haha..
the ultimate "budget tele" would be the canon's own 70-300 IS.. but that'll cost double the price of sigma or tamron..

If Tamron 300MM and Canon 300MM ( Non IS ) is the same price, which 1 will be better and u will go for which 1? any reason? Sigma will be higher compare to those 2 ( check the price from my place )
