I thought the law regarding usb-c by the end of 2024, all mobile phones, tablets and cameras sold in the EU will have to be equipped with a USB Type-C charging port. From spring 2026, the obligation will extend to laptops. So Apple need to comply with the law.
If they were to make a portless iphone and using magsafe with usb-c wont it cost more since now they have to supply magsafe with each new iphone? If they want to force millions to buy magsafe to charge their new iphones then they are risking people jumping to another brand. Its cheaper just to comply with the law and just put a usb-c like they have done on the ipad.
Not to mention having wireless charging is still not there yet. Its a secondary optional charging way while usb-c is not only fast in charging, what if you need to transfer a big video file directly to your laptop/macbook?
Or even using Apple itunes Connect to your iphone? What if people want to use their 3.5mm head phone jack? Cant sell a dongle for that if theres not port. If you change your battery at apple or authorize dealer they also need to connect your iphone to a computer to update so it wont display battery warning and will show battery health. The port isnt just for charging, its use for many other things.
Too much hassle when the solution is just to remove the lightining port and change it with a usb-c port is easy and cheap for Apple. They done it for the Ipad.
