Good defence, weak midfield.

One way of looking at the wayward shots by Southampton is our defenders did enough to put the shooters off by not giving them easy chances. There weren't many clear cut easy chances for Southampton. I would attribute it to adequate defensive pressure on the attackers. Southampton did spend a lot of time in our half, especially after we scored, and we let them have the ball and defended rather deep. There is a calmness that Varane brings to the backline that allows Martinez to put in tackles with confidence. This is probably the most stable back 4 in recent memory.

I would say we still sorely need a midfielder. No point bringing in another attacker if we cannot establish control of the midfield.
I am still somehow hoping for FDJ. If not FDJ, then at least another body in midfield.

Their low quality players easily pressured to make rushed poor shots.. United overload the box helps a lot too.. good park the bus tactics..

They won the majority of 2nd ball at the edge of the box and midfield should be a concern.. big contrast to game against Liv where every 2nd ball being contested..

Midfield getting dominated is no surprise.. its actually 1 man midfield, not 3.. one is a striker another one is a centre-back.. one like to hang around up top, another one at the back..

ETH did tweaked his tactic these last 2 games

1. DDG - he no longer build up the from back whenever there were goal kick, he just played his usual style which was long kick to the middle

2. McTom - Many bashed him even myself also wanting him sitting on the bench with Maguire and Shaw but I do believe ETH used him as a 3rd men defender to cover Martinez whenever there were set pieces. With the arrival of Casemiro, hope things can improved

3. Martinez Malacia - these 2 really covered left sided attacking really well

4. Varane - Varane tho similar style with Maguire or Lindelof but his positioning and sense of urgency are far way better than 2

Well for this game, Rashford and Elanga really not suitable for this kind of low block game whenever there were not space to run behind. Really need to have Anthony (?)
