Well, the ability to see long / short term depends on the person.
Having the freedom only makes it easier to take up opportunities that come by their way. I believe if you want it badly enough, family or not, you gonna burn down the world just to get what you want.
For example, I have a friend that was willing to stay apart from his family and stay and work in the UK while wife and kids are here so that he could earn more.
For me, it gave me the extra drive to finish my masters and then change jobs to get more income. I was working on my thesis and working during the weekdays and part time working on weekends.
So like I said, having the lack of commitments only makes it easier to change direction as you see fit. It doesn't make it impossible
