Recently changed my rims and got secondhand rims from a shop. They also installed secondhand tyres *GT Radials* at an extra cost of MYR200 (195/50/15) unsure what year. Wanted to know if I should change these tyres ASAP? The mechanic there said should change 6months in. How dangerous is it to keep driving the car with these tyres. Thanks. If need to change ASAP will need to ikat perut 🥲

How much tread depth is left?

From this you can probably estimate when you should change based on your risk tolerance vs wet performances.

Do remember that dry performances do get better when your tread depth gets lower but your are risking a lot on your wet performances (wet braking & aquaplaning)

Ah I see, thats good information, thank you. Tread depth is still deep. No worries on the tread depth, just wanted to know about the “cracks”.

All tyres manufacturers across the world say tread depth below 1.6 mm is recommended to be replaced with new.

Can't really see any cracks/scratches in your photo. Anyway scratches in used tyres say over 1 year old is common and is not a criteria to replace new.

I typically used Michelin MX2 up to 120k km over some 7 years with plenty of scratches on front tyres. Replacement is solely based on tread depth of min 1.6 mm, according to all tyre manufacturers and not based on what mechanics/tyre shops say.

FYI, do you know how many layers and how thick the tires for the so call minor cracks to impact overall safety? If only minor cracks on the surface there is nothing to worry about, unless you can see steel wire visible thru the cracks than is better to change it.

Do go and join drifting/touge class you will know why we can come out this. Most drifter use 2nd hand tires for training and drive until steel wire come out, creating all the sparks then only burst so that is the limit.

What year are they, is the rubber still soft and not hardened? If still quite soft then can keep using.

still can use, but if it continue to peel more and causing your ride to be bumpy and having unpleasant sound then is time to change

Quite bumpy, harsh sound as in road noise? If so then yes, makes cabin noise so damn noisy. Want to change but will have to wait a few months for 💵

bumpy as in your tyres is like hitting a bump constantly like there is something stucked on the your tyres, imagine driving on a tyres that is bloated/pregnant, if your tyres has flat spot or broken thread block you will have the same feel too, and you absolutely need to change the tyres as soon as possible

if bumpy because of your tyres stiffness or over pressure, then that is not really a big problem

in term of noise, it is dependent on the tyres, older tyres will have more noise when the thread wear off more, if you cant stand the noise then change to a better tyres

tyres rubber compound will get harden through the repeat heat cycle from driving, if the compound harden you will have more noise and not so grippy in certain driving condition even though there is plenty of thread left, so that's the sign to change the tyres too
