I have been thinking of replacing my old monitor (have weird white spots in the corner), so I have been reading up online on all the new features like resolution, framerate, etc.

Went to digital mall to have a look and was dissapointed. Not only are there limited amount of monitor on display, the video playing on these monitors also do not reflect their capabilities (low res video on high res monitor, choppy framerate, etc).

I wanted to have a look in person to see whether its worth it to buy a monitor with upgraded resolution/framerate, will I have better luck at different malls? Or do you guys just rely on reviews for buying monitors?

Buying a PC monitor depends
Screen resolution ?
Screen size ?
Display color accuracy ?
Budget ?
Ultra wide ?
Curved ?
HDR peak brightness ?
Fast response ?
Higher refresh rate ?
How many HDMI ? Display port ? USB passthrough ? do you need?

If above all non your worry simply 24 inch s2421 dell IPS display will get the job done

I decided on the size first then look at price and reviews.

Make a list of monitors that are within your budget & requirements. Then search for reviews on the internet.

I am considering the upgrade to at least 1440p, 144hz but i wanted to compare them with my own eyes. Which is why i went to digital mall. I also wanted to know how bad is the ips vs va panels color differences.

I guess the way for shopping for higher end/entertainment purposes monitors in malaysia are just by looking at reviews.

I had planned to go Low Yat Plaza to have a look first. Maybe even buy it there. Then MCO 2.0 started.

I just wanted something big and cheap so wasn't so critical for me to look at it. In the end bought Viewsonic VX3276-2K-MHD 75Hz. This was in Jan 2021.

Is really depends your purpose

If you really into colors accuracy you might want to consider glossy over anti glare finishing

Hp more details about anti glare and glossy
https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/tech-takes/an...creen-pros-cons

Then typical IPS commonly available day to day use purpose affordable price i do have the ViewSonic VX 32 but doesn't produced the correct color due to anti glare and your environment lightning

VA panel deep black scene better than typical IPS

After typical IPS and VA there are oled AMOLED qdot and so on i assume already over your budget

So is really depends your purpose what you planning to do with your monitor

If you need 144hz i assume you more on game? Assume you do have a okay enough GPU to constantly pump up 144 fps and above for the game you playing , if the GPU cannot keep up the refresh rate either the screen tearing or flickering of course you can lower the refresh rate to match the frame rate

You don't need any monitor with Nvidia gsync or free sync certified as long there are adaptive sync mostly will work for both i believe just turn on adaptive sync the from your monitor and enable the sync from AMD or Nvidia drivers

Do they really have a wide range of monitors on display there if you know? I dont really want to travel there just to see them playing some low res youtube videos on their monitors.

From what i understand is that va has improved so much that the color inaccuracy is somewhat negligable for non professional use.

Thats why i wanted to see with my own eyes.
This plus other new features like higher res, higher framerate, hdr, curve or not. I wanted to experience it myself instead of just reading reviews.

Yes i am also considering a new gpu, hopefully can wait until new series of gpus are launched.

If you are so fussy, then bring your android box or whatever with 4K display and play an Ultra 4K HDR to test. I can guarantee no PC shop will have nice home theater setup for you to test.

I faced the exact same issue as you did by heading to places like Lowyat Plaza and Digital Mall. I ended up buying my current Xiaomi 34" ultrawide via Shopee instead. It was a bit of a gamble but honestly, zero regrets getting it.

  • Check Review, especially from rtings and hardware Unboxed.
  • Check monitor forum or reddit to gather more feedback from user.
  • Check around shop to see if got physical unit to check out.
  • Find the most value seller in shopee with double check their reputation.
  • If physical shop price similar, I will get from physical shop.
  • Avoid unrealistic selling cost seller.

I watch lots of Youtuber reviews (avoid brand sponsored ones) and asking readers here their opinion.

I also try to look for actual demo unit if available just to be sure.

Thanks all. I guess there is no place in Malaysia that we can properly go have a look by ourselves and will have to rely on 3rd party reviews

I buy based on price, I decide budget first, then compare different specs
minimum spec should be FHD

I always eye for Dell's monitor, on-site 1-1 exchange easily. The price is steep for some but the after-sales support is good. I've exchanged my monitors multiple times just to get a panel with minimal IPS glow and no backlight bleed.

My dell monitor (U2414h) just started dying on me. Can exchange monitors with dell for discounts?

Off course not. No company will do that.
