I just got a used monster T480, i7 8650, 32GB, 1TB SSD, touchscreen
Works well enough

Anything below 8th gen jangan.. unless dirt cheap

Thinkpad T, X, X1C should be good
Avoid Elcheapo (E series)

3rd party seller.. usually they have lots of the same so u can cherry pick a nice unit, and any problem just swap back
Can try looking on carousell SG. Many nice machines there.

Yes, and if ur an employee, uh u need to return the laptop in functional working condition so its less likely to be damaged
However, check for physical cracks just in case the laptop was dropped

Most of the better series (the expensive price tag ones) of business class laptop like Thinkpads or Latitudes are MIL-STD 810G tested

Consumer stuff like ideapad and inspiron .. meh

Since u just want a fun laptop, u can consider those X series ultraportable like X280/T480S/T490S (~600-750 sing onwards) or X1C 6th gen (~900 sing)
T480 monster souped up spec also not that expensive.. I got one for actual work for 900

don't buy anything with celeron. while the processing power is more than adequate for basic office work, i've found that the gpu side of thing is seriously lacking, even open basic websites is a challenge.

I found one refurbished laptop. Lenovo Thinkpad T480s i5 8th Gen. Is it good? Priced around RM1.8k. Another one is Lenovo Thinkpad 13 i5 7th Gen around RM1.4k. Which one better?

Also, better Lenovo or Dell? Thanks

Compare the spec. Latest gen doesn't mean better. Although not a fair comparisom but my i5 gen system still much faster than laptop with i5 gen8 cpu

RM1800 / 560 sing a lot of choices in this bracket

Depends on criteria which one more important.
Light Weight, powerful machine, any special screens (1440/ 400 or 500 nits) cost more.. also touchscreen/backlit kb, and whether u need truckload of RAM (T480/490 better) or u ok with one soldered (T480S/490S)

T480s   FHD IPS NON TOUCH SCREEN i7-8650u/8GB Soldered On Ram+1 Empty Slot/No Storage/no charger-$620/set
All the sets comes with BACKLIT KEYBOARD & Fingerprint Reader** , FHD IPS Screen (Matte Surface)

Why? There are a lot of discounts for new laptop in lazada/shopee with 2 years warranty somemore. Just wait for the 8.8 sales if you missed the 7.7 sales.

My T480 also not bad I guess. It's configurable battery so if want portable, 1.49kg or so just unplug the battery.
With the internal battery it can manage 2hrs; plus external one pretty much all day.

Quite good platform.. at least things can be upgraded all the way to 32GB (my X280 cute and smol but stuck with 8GB ram which is a problem)

Yes as many of them are ex lease or could be a manufacturer’s or distributor’s roadshow or media units.

When buying it’s important to buy from the right seller.

Refurbished by who is the big question to ask.

it's 2022, still got companies rely work on physical performance? now all VM d,

just use thin client and everything cloud performance in VM, 16/32 threads, with 16/32GRam. or more if they subs higher package.

noneed worry of any antivirus/malware, if infected also, they wiped out your profile.

its on the cloud;
The way the entire project on miro looks like a Hawaiian pizza, all the comments and few hundred screens in there, only MBP or 32GB-windows can load.

Firm ok with paying company wide license, flat fee
but not ok with expensive per head of Figma

that's why miro is used..
but its super taxing on the laptop.

All my family laptop or desktops are refurbished.

Just one advice.

You have to see and test the thing yourself...don't buy online unless they give a one to one exchange or will repair it free.
It will be more expensive than online, you you get is peace of mind

Cos my last laptop, I wanted to buy online, but decided to go to shop, first one had a bulging battery, second one unresponsive keyboard for certain keys, then another one had speaker cracking sound, end up the shop told the technician to use all the parts from the rejected laptop and do one good one for me.
Yes, paid more, but satisfied.

Anyway, regarding the core processor, 6th gen should be OK. But important is 16gb RAM and SSD.
SSD also just get the Crucial MX500. Please don't get el-cheapo SSD

take a look here:
https://www.dell.com/en-my/outlet/SystemsSt...20Tablets&pid=2

I brought 2 Inspirons for my kid studies (15", 11th gen i7, 8gb ram, 512gb), so far used for 6months, no issue, comes with 1 year warranty on hardware 1-1 exchange on site. Can purchase extended warranty.

current generation is 11th.

for the price u are paying for anything below 6th, performance wise doest make any sense.

just to give you some perseptive.

11th gen i3 is equally or better than 4th gen i7 in terms of performance and battery saving. you will also have less failing parts and easier to get those for newer gen

I wouldn't buy a refurbished (rubbish) laptop in 2022.

Now that supply chain issues have been resolved,
you can pick up a NEW laptop that
performs similar or vastly superior to refurbished "i7" laptop

Not to mention there are many new technologies such as:
1. Fast Charging
(get 80% battery charge that lasts 6-8 hours of usage)

2. Noise Cancellation
(remove your mic background noise)

3. High Refresh screen (120hz)
Vibrant colors LED screen (IPS Panel instead of old LCD)

If you can spend the extra,
this Dell i3 (12th generation) laptop performance will last you years.

Might want to do some research before giving advice...

7th Gen and 8th Gen i5
doesn't come with 1 Year Dell/HP/Lenovo onsite warranty
doesn't come with the latest tech (Fast Charging)

But performs slower/around a Pentium 7505

Depending on what and how you use the laptop, when plugged in, my kids I5 2nd Gen (16gb, SSD) no difference with my I5 7gen and also 11gen for MS Office.

Purchase a 2nd hand tablet. That's what I did. Can consume media during lunch break using cellular. TV shows, movies and manga. If going for android can download flud and torrent.

Screens & battery life are normally better. Downside: cannot play PC games only iOS/android.

just check Cinebench and Passmark before making a purchase
so you get to make an informed decision.

"i5" and "i7" means very little

here is an "i7" in 2021 losing to the i3 from 2022

I will rather not unless it's business laptops, there are many affordable brands for new laptops like acer, asus, etc... always go for new if possible (and they have warranty too which is better).
