Second British Invasion

The Second British Invasion consisted of music acts from the United Kingdom that became popular in the U.S. during the early-to-mid 1980s primarily due to the cable music channel MTV. The term derives from the similar British Invasion of the U.S. in the 1960s.

Is Old Music Killing New Music?

https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2...w-music/621339/

Old songs now represent 70 percent of the U.S. music market, according to the latest numbers from MRC Data, a music-analytics firm. Those who make a living from new music—especially that endangered species known as the working musician—should look at these figures with fear and trembling. But the news gets worse: The new-music market is actually shrinking. All the growth in the market is coming from old songs.

comedians say the best job is singer/musician.
if you sing/play the same song they heard 1000 times, they love it.
if you tell the same joke they heard 1000 times, they hate it.

so just sing old songs. no one will get angry.

Kate Bush’s ‘Running Up That Hill’ Sets Three Chart Records And Hits UK No. 1
https://deadline.com/2022/06/kate-bush-uk-c...ngs-1235048252/

The power of television compels you.

Kate Bush has now broken three UK chart records by hitting No. 1. It’s No. 4 in the U.S. on the BIllboard Hot 100 singles chart, and Bush’s 1985 LP Hounds of Love tops the Billboard Catalog Albums chart this week.

In the UK, Bush is the oldest woman to top the singles chart, and her achievement of doing so after 37 years is the longest time a song has taken to get to No 1. It beats Wham!, whose “Last Christmas” did it January 2021. The song is also marked as the longest gap between No 1 singles, with 44 years elapsed since her debut, “Wuthering Heights.”

“Running Up That Hill reached No 3 when it was originally released.”

Among the stranger things to come from last month’s Netflix premiere of Stranger Things 4 has been the renewed interest Kate Bush’s 1985 song “Running Up That Hill,” which is featured in the new season. Today the revitalized track returned to the Billboard Hot 100, where it peaked at No. 30 some 37 years ago.

The new success is all thanks to the May 27 season premiere of Stranger Things. .

The song — originally titled “A Deal with God” before her label rethought it — was Brit Bush’s biggest Stateside pop hit and her second-biggest in the UK. “Running Up That Hill” also was featured in 2019 episodes of HBO’s Big Little Lies, Showtime’s On Becoming a God in Central Florida, and ABC’s How to Get Away with Murder, as well as the 2018 pilot of FX’s Pose.

"Under Pressure" is a song by the British rock band Queen and singer David Bowie. Originally released as a single in October 1981, it was later included on Queen's 1982 album Hot Space.

Please guys, post only songs you like to share because you (heard it before) and you like it.

No point simply posting songs because we can do a search using google and get all the popular songs in the 80s.

Most of the bands were formed in the 70s too. My 2 cents, 80s music is too broad but I taken the new wave bands as the sound of the early 80s.

For example the early albums in the late 70s by The Police were good.

While the 60s have Beatles and the 70s have Abba and Bee Gees, the 80s is new wave, though the new wave bands started in the 70s.

Though disco music is still much alive in the early 80s, disco music is 70s era.

What la... that song was from the 60s. Just because you hear it in a 80s top gun movie doesn't make it 80s.

Ya, just digging around (YouTube) for songs I heard and liked... and digging more on the lyrics and background of the songs... so post some of them since I'm listening 🎧 and having some fun screencast it from my phone to tv...

One can dig around... and not dig up Sheena Easton - Telefone unless you were there in the 80s and remembered it.

Here's one that was on the radio played many times throughout the day...

Talking Heads - Burning down the house.

From google...

""Chariots of Fire" is an instrumental theme written and recorded by Vangelis for the soundtrack of the 1981 film of the same name."

"Chariots of Fire, British dramatic film, released in 1981, that tells the true story of two British runners who brought glory to their country in the Olympic Games of 1924 in Paris. The film won both the BAFTA Award and the Academy Award for best picture and also garnered the Golden Globe Award for best foreign movie."

Has anyone posted this yet?

Roxy Music - Same Old Scene (1980)

This is the template for some of the Duran Duran upcoming albums in the early 1980s.

Very similar New Wave/New Romantic genre, cool bass lines, heavy synth, and funky guitar

Any fans of New Romantic genre?

Songs which are characterised by eerie singing coupled with very fashionable attire. Coincidentally, the bass lines are always very cool and unique.

The first three songs below best describe New Romantic

Duran Duran - Save a prayer

Japan - Cantonese boy

Freur - Doot Doot (the song begins at 1:02)

But some of the later New Romantic songs evolved into something more like pop such as below

Thompson Twins - Hold me now

Kajagoogoo - Ooh to be ah

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Have totally forgotten this song Hold Me Now (1983) from Thompson Twins.

Just as catchy as this...

New wave and alternative rock were early to mid 80s. Towards the end of the 80s, there was Janet Jackson... new dance moves that carries into the 90s...

The Toronto appearance on 13 August 1982 was the second annual "Police Picnic" festival, with the band headlining. Personally, the best decade for songs is the 70s. 80s is no 2 and 50s/60s/90s is no 3.

But that's just my preference lah.

Lately I have just been listening to 96.3 wrock compilations on YouTube. Some mixes were excellent while some are not so, especially when they throw in Tagalog songs in as well. But overall they're mixing lots of songs from 70s to 90s and it's a joy to just listen whatever they dish out

From wiki... Four different versions of the song have been officially released. The original song was released in 1987, which was followed by the most successful incarnation, a slightly edited version, omitting the Christmas references, created for the soundtrack to the 1990 film Pretty Woman.

Far away in time... from 1980, 43 years ago...

This the reason why some like to getaway on the weekends every now and then.

Martha and the Muffins - Echo Beach (1980)

From nine to five, I have to spend my time at work
My job is very boring, I'm an office clerk
The only thing that helps me pass the time away
Is knowing I'll be back at Echo Beach someday

Far away in time, Echo Beach.

A comment in YouTube..."Whoever thought of putting this video to this song...GENIUS!"

Or better still, just close your eyes and listen to this song in the dark.

come bro yongku99 we continue our discussion here

dunno why seiferalmercy del and locked that thread
https://forum.lowyat.net/lofiversion/index....5356189-50.html

"QUOTE(yongku99 @ Apr 2 2023, 03:12 PM)
for Megadeth, i'm more to Marty Friedman era in Megadeth. But this type of riff really coming from Dave Mustaine thing, Metallica robbed the riff from Dave and make it their own "The Four Horseman".
*"

not only that one

according to dave

https://blabbermouth.net/news/ex-metallica-...mber-those-days

"The thing that bothered me the most was I had all my music, and I left it behind and I said, 'Don't use my music.' And of course they did.

They used it on the first record [1983's 'Kill 'Em All'], on the second record [1984's 'Ride The Lightning']. There's parts of my music on a song on the third record [1986's 'Master Of Puppets']. All the solos on the first record are mine, except that they're just performed by Kirk [Hammett, METALLICA's current guitarist]. And [they're] close but not the same. And he's not a bad guitar player."

When asked if he got royalties for that, Mustaine said: "Well, most of 'em, yeah, but Kirk got my royalties for [the song] 'Metal Militia' [from 'Kill 'Em All'] for many, many years. And he has to see the check, so I know somebody saw that I wasn't getting paid.

You can see the emotion of him playing this song again. Like it all came crashing back. whistling.gif

Stephanie Mills - Never knew love like this before (Ruud's Extended Edit)

"Never Knew Love Like This Before" is a song written and produced by songwriters James Mtume and Reggie Lucas for American R&B recording artist Stephanie Mills' second studio album Sweet Sensation (1980). The song became Mills' biggest worldwide hit.
The song was inspired by the birth of Lucas' daughter Lisa. Sad to see this song became a LGBTQIA+ Pride song... sad.gif
I took the song and edited it a bit. Thus creating a longer version.

This remix is my favorite.
Stephanie Mills - Never knew love like this before (Ruud's Extended B Harris Edit)

Quite recently the song was remixed by Barry Harris. He made the song sound fresh and crispy again. His version was used in the series 'Pose' , to celebrate Candy's life.

listening to some 80s piano-driven songs from the 80s can really take you back in time, watching the old TV back in the 80s.

Standing in the dark
