you have to compare apple to apple bro.
since it is a 2Socket workstation/server based system, we are not looking to compare against 1socket system (ie. core2duo)

for what i have seen on most of the applcations AMD is still lack behind, even on Intel's clovertown processor X5365, intel on this have yet to launch their new Harpertown/Woldale (newer generation of CPU based on 45nano/higher cache CPU) that will be b much better than intel's own X5365.

check out the SPECint_rate_2006 score benchmark:

bullit, try SPECfp_rate_2006 scores then. What? tongue.gif
Cherry picking tests is proven to be the worst way to do benchmarks.

3DMark's CPUmark is quite an accurate representation of what the CPU can do in games. 8 cores are not used fully all the time, but 4 are.

Opteron Barcelone will be in two series.

83XX series will be $ 600 to $ 1000

while

23XX series will be $ 200 - $ 500

Both in USD $.

But you need an uber-expensive mobo (currently only Tyan has Opteron server boards, and that LN1 from Asus)

RD790 is the ultimate chip for both Opteron and Phenom (yes, 1st time that a mainstream chipset is used for both consumer and server). Current Barcelona chipsets are on Broadcom.

Did you check the links I posted?

2 x 2GHz K10: 4242

Comparison

Intel Xeon Octal Core 2000 MHz = 4335
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=2982103
Intel Xeon Octal Core 2660 MHz = 5662
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=746484
Intel Q6600 Quad Core 2725 MHz = 4336
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=1837829

Some weird variance in 3DMark06 CPU score though.... 4 and 8 cores very close. hmm.gif

X.E.D, that SPECfp_rate_2006 is a synthetic benchmark (also memory bandwidth dependant) and usually only applies to HPC applications. For server type applications, usually SPECInt_rate counts. wink.gif

Proof? From what I found, so far only TYAN have BIOS updates and mobos for them. Haven't seen one from ASUS... hmm.gif

Proof? AFAIK all AMD server boards are using NVIDIA chipsets. rolleyes.gif

3DM06 you posted was ran on a L1N with a beta BIOS I think. Weird issues though, single channel mem for example.

Broadcom makes chipsets, besides from wireless chips. They've been supporting AMD for quite some time on the server front, starting 05 IIRC.
And Tyan uses them for the native Barcey boards. (nForce Pro is a joke for servers, you don't put something that hot in servers; it's only for workstations as its name implies)

BTW Asus' new L1A is based on RD790 instead of nF 680a, should be much cooler (RD discrete chipsets are always cooler, and the PCIe lanes are all on one chip. wink.gif)

Oh, and SPECint_rate is also a throughput test as its name implies.
