at first, i have a unifi router at downstairs, the WIFI name is ABC. but then when I go upstairs the signal becomes very weak like only 1 or 2 bar.
So, I bought a router and put it at my upstairs to setup as a AP. Also set the WIFI name as ABC.
When I am at downstairs my hp connected to downstairs WIFI ABC and it is fine. But then when I go upstairs the signal becomes weak again. I have to disconnect it and re-connect it to WIFI ABC (this time, it is connected to the upstairs WIFI ABC), then the signal is back to strong.
What went wrong here?
Is there a way I don't have to disconnect and reconnect it?

Reduce the transmit power 1 unit per time.

Your device will seamlessly roam to the strongest Wifi node.

Mesh is the only solution.
Got many people selling brand new mesh router for cheap at Carousell.
If using old routers, u may need to flash with third party firmware. Depending on the hardware type, some can be converted to mesh.

TS, u can't solved your problem unless got yourself a mesh system.
Me being switching between AP for best connection last time like you. Upgraded to asus mesh... really happy with it.
You can try buy 2nd hand AC model if there is no need AX yet.

Without mesh protocol the switching is stateless. Not much the router could do about it. Its totally up to client device wireless driver to decide when to switch; unless you use router like asus that has roaming assist (available for non mesh model as well) to force kick your device out when reaching certain low signal threshold - forcing your phone to reconnect, but to a new, nearer AP.
In my house without mesh system and only partial roaming assist, my pixel phone would switch smoothly. My another phone, a Sony however have hard time figuring out the best AP to connect to.
So the solution is either: a. Use mesh router b. Use router that has roaming assist like asus. You need to do some signal survey in your house to get the correct cut off threshold. c. Use better phone/device that can switch ap intelligently

mesh router is your real solution here.
I've meshed up my boss's bungalow...literally every corner now got wifi, even toilet /bathroom full bar...they can use jacuzzi while using mobile or ipad connected to the internet.

This is the difference between a mesh WiFi system and using multiple router as AP.
Proper mesh WiFi will offer seamless roaming function. Some even have 802.11r fast roaming for gapless handover.
The best one I've used won't even cause my video call to freeze when walking around.
TLDR: There's no solution. Dumb AP don't have any ways to force disconnect of sticky client.

I was sceptical with mesh technology a year ago, thought it was only gimic.
But then, spent my money to try it after having bad connections upstairs (like you) while conferencing and studying / streaming / gaming
The best decision & investment ever.
Move to mesh bro, it solves your issues completely.

Get a mesh router, it will solve your problem like all the sifu recommended. The mesh can also be a router and your coverage will be seamless. You can buy 2 below RM400 depends on your needs.

Repurposed AP from a home router lacks many roaming features that why OP experience such issues. Roaming features required some protocol such as 802.11k/r and ideally central manageability features found on enterprise class AP (eg from ubiquity network or HPE aruba)
The home mesh system is which the manufacturer put such features into the purpose built home routers and sold in pairs or multi kit for ease of setup. Still such mesh system having many limitations as manufacturer didn't bother with putting in complicated interface. If you don't satisfy with such approach you might as well get enterprise class AP system
