This case is currently ongoing and new information is being released daily as media outlets receive information. Here is what we know so far about the death of Rina Arano.
The porn and sex industry in Japan is huge as most people who have visited online sites like PornHUB or other sex websites know. According to the Tokyo Weekender,
The Japanese porn industry is estimated to be worth more than $20 billion, which shouldn’t be surprising once you consider that Japan produces twice as many X-rated movies as the United States. According to one veteran porn performer, this comes out to over 5,000 titles a year or 14 pornographic films being released in Japan every single day.
There are various studios that produce this porn or JAV (Japanese Adult Videos) but because their market is so big, there are many small independent producers as well. And many young women decide to skip the middle man altogether and freelance. Taking on projects from private photographers and fetish enthusiasts, they make their living modeling for anyone who will pay for their services.
This case involves a typical middle-class Japanese office worker named Hiroyuki Sanpei and a model/adult actress named Rina Arano. The two met through online social media as Rina was an independent model who used her social media profiles with various “stage names” to gain customers.
It was revealed that Rina freelanced for photo shoots and videos as a nude model and would find customers online who would sometimes pay her up to 100,000 yen ($1000) per shoot. She was involved in doujin (fan-made sexually explicit) modeling as well as other S & M Fetish-type interests. She would meet these clients and often go to their homes for the shoots.
Unfortunately, an average officer worker Hiroyuki contacted Rina, picked her up from the station, allegedly kept her captive in his vacation home, and finally killed and buried her in the forest.
Who was this average Joe? Why did Rina agree to meet? Had they met before? What happened in his vacation home? Why did he allegedly kill Rina and how did he get caught? This is the tragic story of a 23-year-old woman who was just starting her life and the 33-year-old family man who ended that dream.

Life of Rina
Born in 1999, Rina Arano was the second daughter in a family of four from Tokyo. According to media outlet Bunshun, the family was an upper-middle-class family with a father who was a high-ranking executive in a pharmaceutical company. Her mother and older sister were both beautiful and elegant women. Rina was the young one who was known as the cute baby of the family.
In elementary school, she was pretty active and popular and loved singing and dancing. She was in the hip-hop dance club and was hoping to be a doctor when she grew up. Her elementary school picture shows a cute girl in glasses and braces with a bright smile.
A neighbor of the family talked about Rina saying,
“She was a little short and cute girl with a doll-like face. She had an older sister, both sisters had an elegant feeling of being young ladies in a good home. Her dad wore glasses and a suit even on holidays, and her mom was a slender beautiful woman who stood out in the neighborhood.”
Even in high school she was interested in fashion, music, and shopping but continued to dream of being a nurse. It seems according to friends who knew her, she began rebelling against her parents and started hanging out with a different crowd in the Harajuku area.
She started focusing more on her image, complaining she was fat and wished she had lighter skin. After entering nursing school, she decided to drop out when she was 19 and moved to an apartment in Kabukicho.
Kabukicho is known as the “red-light district” of Tokyo. Her Instagram showed pictures of her spending most of her nights hanging out at host clubs and spending exorbitant amounts of money there.
Host clubs are places where women go to sit and drink with young and attractive men who flirt with them. They charge the women hourly as well as for extra perks and to buy the men drinks. In one post, Rina wrote she spent 700,000 yen ($7000) in one night at one of these host clubs.
Living away from her parents, spending lots of money on shopping, fashion, cosmetics, and host clubs, she was getting her money from somewhere. It was later revealed that under various pseudonyms, she was doing nude modeling, amateur JAV, fetish photography that uses things such as bondage with ropes and handcuffs, as well as doujin, which is fan-made independent photography.
Despite all this, in 2021, she decided to move back home with her parents and was slowly turning her life around. She was hoping to save up some money and find love as she expressed getting married and having kids.
Despite these dreams, her life was cut short, and instead, her remains were found thrown in a tree in the forest close to a road. The last sighting of her alive was with a 33-year-old man named Hiroyuki Sampei

Life of Hiroyuki Sampei
Hiroyuki was born in 1989 and was from Fukushima, Japan. His family had been in the United States but his father was transferred back to Japan when Hiroyuki was in elementary school. He was a small but outgoing boy who was on the school basketball team.
Living in a quite well-to-do neighborhood and coming from a family of wealth and privilege, he was known as a bright, typical, and friendly guy. After his schooling, he continued on to work as an office worker and in the public relations department of a famous Japanese media organization.
From the surface, his life seemed great. He had a well-paying job, was married, and had moved into a really nice and expensive home in Ibaraki Prefecture. When his job was transferred to Kawasaki near Tokyo, instead of selling the home, he was able to keep it as a vacation home while living in a nice apartment in Kawasaki.
Neighbors near his Ibaraki house said they sometimes saw his wife and him walking their dog in the neighborhood or having tea in the backyard. But as time went on, Hiroyuki would visit the vacation home twice a month, usually on his own.
What most people who knew Hiroyuki didn’t know was that despite his outward appearance and life of luxury and comfort, below were secrets that his family may have helped cover-up. Media outlets reported that Hiroyuki had been arrested several times before the incident of Rina’s disappearance.
Nazomate, a Japanese blog reported that in 2016, he was arrested on two separate occasions. In one, he had an altercation with the Ibaraki Police, and in the other, he had grabbed a woman from behind and thrown her down onto the street causing injuries. In 2017, he was once again arrested for causing injuries to a female.
It is not sure why he never was charged or served any prison time but most media outlets presume it was his family connections that kept him out of prison. Usually, rich families are able to avoid any punishment by paying off the victims. This also helps the police in keeping their crime rate low.
Another sign that points to the family of Hiroyuki being able to suppress his crimes are the fact that despite being arrested three times, he continued to work in a high-level position in a Japanese company.
Japanese companies are very strict when it comes to having anyone with a criminal record. If Hiroyuki had a criminal record, he would most likely have been fired from his job.
With the freedom of having a big vacation house with a basement and large space between him and other houses, he might have felt more emboldened and decided to see how much more he could get away with it.
Despite having a wife and a nice apartment in the city, he decided to reach out to people like Rina, so he could live out his sexual fantasies. Investigators found that Rina and Hiroyuki had contacted each other previously via Twitter and had already met previously on one occasion.
Unfortunately, Rina’s second meeting with Hiroyuki would end with her life.

The Crime
Japan Today reported that Rina said goodbye to her family on June 5, 2022. This would be the last contact she made with her family. She left her parent's home saying she was going out to meet a friend.
On that same day, Hiroyuki drove to Mito Station in Ibaraki where he waited for Rina. Once Rina arrived at the station, they met and a CCTV camera captured Rina getting into Hiroyuki’s car as they drove away.
It is assumed that once at the house, Hiroyuki confined her in the home, most likely the basement. Whether something went wrong and Rina decided to leave but was stopped or if this was something Hiroyuki had been planning all along is unknown.
Rina’s parents weren’t too concerned the first night as Rina was known to hang out until the early hours of the morning or even spend a couple of days at a friend’s home. But by June 8th, when Rina failed to come home or contact her parents, they decided to report her missing.
Within a week, the police were able to finally narrow down her whereabouts and learned that she had gotten into a car. They learned that Hiroyuki had taken Rina to his home and the police arrived at his vacation home.
Talking to Hiroyuki, he admitted to the police that he had met and brought Rina to his home, but told them that he had quickly broken up with her and sent her away. He denied confining her but police found her smartphone at his home. He was arrested for suspicion of confining Rina in his home.
Using his car’s driving recorder, they were able to follow his car route and found that he had made a stop at a forested area about a kilometer or about 1000 yards away from his home. Police began searching the forested area.
On June 18th, 2022, the police found the naked body of a woman who was thrown down a cliff by the road and stuck in the trees. Based on decomposition, medical experts were able to guess she had been dead between 2 to 3 weeks and confirmed her identity as Rina Arano.
Autopsies showed that Rina’s hyoid bone was broken and she had bruises on her wrists that could have been caused by handcuffs. Hyoid bone fractures are rare and usually caused by strangulation or hanging. When interrogated by the police, Hiroyuki admitted to handcuffing Rina but said it was part of their consensual agreement. He denied having killed Rina or knowing her whereabouts.

Arrest & Sentencing
Initially arrested for confining Rina on June 14th, once her body was found, he was re-arrested for abandonment of a corpse. The investigation is ongoing and as more details and evidence is released, investigations might lead to Hiroyuki being charged with the murder of Rina as well.
Despite his claims of innocence, it does not look good for Hiroyuki. With a confession that he handcuffed her and the fact that her phone was found in his home, it seems more likely that he confined Rina against her will.
His car’s drive recorder also places his car near the area where her body was found. It should only be a matter of time before police can conclude that Hiroyuki kidnapped, confined, killed, and disposed of Rina.
Unfortunately, this type of crime is not rare in Japan. With so many young women, including girls as young as 14 being reeled into the sex-trade industry in Japan, predators are finding it quite easy to target these vulnerable girls.
Middle-aged Japanese men visit high-school girl cafes, maid cafes, girl’s bars, and hostess clubs, where they have access to young women who are in need of money. For the right price, they can persuade girls to visit love hotels, come to their homes, undress, model, make adult videos, and have sexual interactions for large sums of money.
The dangers of online social media like Twitter and Facebook, as well as chat forums like 2chan and forums made to bring older men and young girls together, is ever-growing and making it easier to have access to this market.
Hopefully, as awareness of these types of crimes grows, women will be aware and take more strides to protect themselves. And maybe support lines might also be available where these girls can reach out to stay safe.
