Car is Myvi 2005. Had about 300,000KM on this old thing.
Now having problem - engine died at random during stop at traffic light. Usually when A/C is on and radio is turned on.
All radio settings got reset once the engine died.

No check engine light.
Repairs done: changed fuel pump, cleaned throttle body, new spark plugs.

My usual mechanic under the tree stumped on this curious problem. Bit of googling says that it might have something to do with radio but it was a really old thread, so I thought that this might be a common problem that I didn't know before.

EDIT: checked alternator and battery. Normal.

Now sometimes the engine died when turning on the headlights lol. Happens when stuck in jam.

How old is the current battery? Alternator?

Battery & Systems Test done ? Got the printed test result ?

Not done yet. How does a bad battery can cause this problem?

I think last time I replace the battery was back in 2020. Amaron brand.

Correct an old weak battery can cause the engine to stall. Systems Test are meant to check if the electrical charging systems are ok. If there are not ok, that will create problems for the battery too.

Come to think of it, electrical stuff isn't exactly the mechanic strong suit. Never saw him hold an OBD tool. I think I have reason to doubt his word saying that the battery and alternator is good.

Where to do this test? Battery shop?

Audio reset means power supply cut off. Check wiring/ battery connection.

Perodua Service Centers would have better diagnostic tool. Alternatively you can check with your local battery reseller if they can do B&ST for you.

RPM for idle mode is too low?

about 700RPM, normal for the engine as stated under the hood.

Yep recently they do battery test and tayar check also as part of std service package, they kasi slip lepas habis service. Really helps to better predict the time to replace batts.

with your case, do you feel Jerking/engine start to die off when in Standstill mode? And RPM drop?
If yes, then only set higher...

The more electronic plugin/devices in the car will caused power drainage(Handphone Charger/GPS/New Player/speaker./Camera). Hence higher RPM is needed to keep the Power supply steady.

Most probably electrical. Alternator might be the problem. Not enough to charge the battery and maintain normal electrical functional. That's why radio reset. Radio lost all power to maintain it setting. Means battery not properly charge. Next might be wiring problem. Check at batt supplier.

Change throttle body switch/ sensor and service your throttle body as well

Other normal wear and tear like spark plug , air filter and oil filter if change follow schedule should not be the problem

check charging systems and car battery.

From the symptoms seems like electrical problem to me as well, likely alternator or battery.

It could also be intermittent or current supply not enough to run whole system.

Check battery. Check throttle body may need to change.
Or change new Passo engine.

battery and alternator is okay.

looks like have to send few days to workshop for thorough wiring checking.

The person who gave you the OK, is there a printed test Battery & Systems Test result to backup that OK ? Can you share the results ?

this myvi is actually my brother's. said that he went to a battery shop yesterday and they said charging capacity and whatnot is at almost 100%.

to be honest, this car is not really well taken care of, just a beater car for commuting to work. it's full of literal garbage inside. i wouldn't be surprised if this problem is caused by cockroach that bite into some of the wiring or got shorted in between the electronics. only reason i even bothered to open a thread is because i don't want him borrowing my car because the myvi keep giving problems.

Understand. The problem is without any black & white, it's he said, she said already. And if they don't know how to interpret the results or don't know how to operate a diagnostic tool or using a low quality tool, all these will add to the puzzle. Sorry to say this but very soon its most likely that the vehicle will be on sale due to this intermittent problem. This vehicle can be used in taman and short drives only, no more highways etc, until the problem is identified and fixed and tested and proven to be OK.

If you slowly read back your posts, try to see if you can spot the problem ? 😊

if you mean the 5 years old battery, that's on a 2007 Persona. that one doesn't give any problem for the time being.

It worst thing is to assume that everything is OK, since there are no problems at the moment without ever doing any regular timely battery & systems test.

On 2/7 told my client that his son's Isuzu D-Max battery was going to die within a months time and he should change it ASAP but he wanted to wait until it dies. True enough this evening it died. Replaced it temporarily with a spare Good Battery status but strangely this time the Starter Test showed LOW with 9.31V. Is the Starter Motor going out also just like the other client's Almera ? Time will tell.

So don't assume that everything is OK since there are no problems because with electronics, by the time there are visible problems it can be too late as the damaged had already been sustained. So do B&ST regularly, your battery supplier should be able to help you out. If they can't, they shouldn't be in this line.

Driving same model. I will say alternator is not healthy even if it works. 2 years ago i tried to run the car with just alternator after jump start with another battery, but it is not stable. sometimes it dies.

Usually most old car can run without battery if you managed to start it. But in this case, this myvi can't even when nothing electrical like radio or AC is used.

i do notice that the RPM slightly increased and engine revved and make more noise when headlights are turned on.

oh and the car uses Exora's A/C compressor, which definitely changed the load of the engine because the car makes lousy acceleration and noticeably a lot more noisy when it's on. the A/C workshop said it's totally okay to use larger compressor but I don't really trust it.

want to send to workshop but they had too much car today. oh well.

Went to new workshop. They looked into the problem, test drive to replicate, but no success. Everything working normally. No trouble code was found. Throttle body works fine. Electrical is fine. They suspected the idler valve, but can't be sure because it looks like its moving normally.

They put some grounding wire on battery and then ask to try few days until it happen again. Zero charge for the service.

I don't know but is it even proper to fit an Exora AC compressor into a Myvi ? When I meet my Aircon sifu, I will forward him this situation and see what he says.

That's already crazy enough. It's not okay to run a bigger compressor for the sake of so called colder aircond.
Exora engine torque is equal to a 2.0L or 2.2L.
And its meant to drive front and rear passenger aircond. So obviously it can cope with a bigger compressor but not for a 1.3L.

Admittantly Exora a/c is slightly noisy on slow speed.
At most he should put Myvi 1.5 ac. If it were me I would had strongly objected the mechanic to install such oversized compressor.

Roman Catholic Think of it like trying to sell an oversized battery. Or mechanic trying to say a Lorry alternator works great on the Myvi.
Biggest disadvantage will be loss of power.

Spot on bro. I am beginning to suspect that what actually happened or most probably took place, it was the only stock the reseller had on hand. Instead of buying a correct size compressor for the Myvi, the reseller just used what was available.

Im having similar issues. Car stopped in bumper to bumper traffic

They didn't manage to find the problem. It simply doesn't happen again and everyone doesn't know why. Workshop put an extra grounding wire on the battery and somehow it was fixed. The grounding wires are well known snake oil for old cars, but somehow it worked.

Try add on those extra grounding cable mods.

Does this help with alternator not charging or battery light indicator on the dash board?

Last time my mechanic charged me around rm60 for 1 grounding cable.

They take like random wire from their junk bin, then connect it from the battery negative to random point on the engine bay. Wanted to pay them for their trouble but they won't take it haha.
