Hey Guys
Yeah.. i know ... its 2022.. so what about an iPhone 7 and Hotlink / Maxis? Well i've got a really F**k*d up situation. But here's the details.
Just dont ask the "why iphone and not android" and yada yada. There are technical reasons for my choice. but that's not the issue

Due to budget and circumstances.. i got a Apple iPhone 7 (recon) from a decent reputable reseller/recond. (If i had the budget; i'd be getting a 2022 iPhone SE instead; but like i said... budget constraints).

So the short story is this

When using HOTLINK PREPAID SIM CARDS ONLY (Not MAXIS, DIGI, CELCOM XPAX.. i've already bought and tested these)... the iPhone 7 can detect the SIM card with no problem. can even use internet etc. No problem.

HOWEVER...

When you use the dialer to phone call.. suddenly the phone drops from 4G to NO DATA... and is still TRYING TO DIAL whatever phone number you're calling. Dead silence. Nothing. just a long "Dialling....." like as if it cant connect to the network or something.

Nothing's also happening/wrong on the receiver's end. Except they'll get a missed call SMS notification after the call's canceled

and when calling this Iphone7/hotlink combo... your call wont get through... it'll straight go to voicemail like you're out of network.

But internet and whatsapp; facebook; INTERNET is working damn fine like nobody's business. hell.. i can even whatsapp video call the phone...

The phone's been in for 3 weeks at the company and they decided nope.. they dont wanna try and fix it.. sent me a replacement unit... and ....

....same blardi problem. the iphone and hotlink sim card combo dont like each other...

So i'm asking.. anybody ever seen such a problem before? the dialer not working/making the phone drop its network ... SPECIFICALLY only USING HOTLINK SIM CARDS?!

Better walk-in to near Maxis Centre for further investigations.

Nope.. tried with 5 different sim cards (Original user replaced 3x times... 2x more from a new cards i bought from 7-11)... I only realised why the shop techies couldnt find a problem.. they were using MAXIS labeled SIM cards (Contract/postpaid)....mine were HOTLINK labeled (prepaid)...

and yes..

reformatted and rebooted dozens of times before during and after sim changes...

You can only edit the APN settings if your telco allows it, or if you are using other telco that do not have carier settings in iOS. For the case of Hotlink I believe iOS will use the default carier settings which you can't change.

Perhaps like other forumer said above, walk in to hotlink center to troubleshoot. Or try to call their CS and see what they can do to help.

The Maxis Centre(s) might have encountered the same issue before.... so, they might have the solution(s)...

But for reconditioned unit, it is most probably hardware issue (but funny that it only effecting calls and not data)...

I think you need to setup VoLTE on your iphone to get it working properly

I would have suspected hardware issue (or at least the service team's test methods).. but when a replacement unit is issued .. and an IDENTICAL problem arises... its got to be either a setting somewhere.. or i need to go buy lottery...

... actually.. in one of my earlier diagnostics and testing.. i had to DISABLE VoLTE just to be able to get something like a dial tone or what through... Its enabled by factory default.

This is a big guy local refurbisher.. not some stall in Digital Mall. So i suspect its definitely some kinda problem with HOTLINK settings; since everybody's card works.

Sorry about th elong silence.. slightly irritated and distracted with house problems (Broken toilet windows and broken water pump). I'm taking the phhone and sim(s) to maxis and have a sit down and see what happens . I'll update ya'll later with a definitive answer (if ever this gets fixed)

From the VoLTE thread, we understand Malaysia no longer has 3G, so if the phone support VoLTE + SIM support VoLTE, then the call will go to VoLTE, else call will go to 2G Call.

From your description, I suspect your sim profile does not support VoLTE, so when you make call, the call will drop to 2G.

And somehow there is no 2G in your area (or the phone does not support 2G due to sw or hw issue), so the call just fail and incoming call not working.

Some thing you can check:

1. SETTING > GENERAL > ABOUT > Scroll to Ntwk Provider > ... What it says? .. should be Maxis 50 or something
2. Tap the "Maxis 50" then observe it will turn to IMS STATUS - Voice and SMS? If no means you are not using VoLTE
3. SETTING > MOBILE DATA > DATA PLAN > VOICE & DATA > Make sure the "VoLTE" is switched on. Wait a while. Repeat the above.
4. You should upgrade the phone to latest possible firmware you can upgrade to retry, if still the same, call Maxis to enable VoLTE for your sim

Subsequent checking:

1. SETTING > MOBILE DATA > DATA PLAN > VOICE & DATA > Change to 3G.
2. If your phone has no signal means your phone does not support 2G at all. Not sure where you get your recon phone, could be from country that does not have 2G. This is a ripped off ...
