tl;dr: as an inactive player, you get free to play every now and then. it's typically around the time of a large patch release, for 4 consecutive days.
Text below is accurate as of 2025 but from where I see the past few times throughout the years, it hardly changes so I will mainly post link only from here on.

Campaign Schedule
From Thursday, January 9, 2025 at 12:00 a.m.
to Thursday, February 6, 2025 at 6:59 a.m. (PST)

* Please note that a subscription to FFXIV is required to continue playing after the campaign period.

Free Login Period
Four days including the day on which users first log into the launcher. This period ends on the fourth day at 11:59 p.m. (PST).

Archived: past event 15-30 June

Eligibility
Users must meet the following requirements to participate in the free login campaign:

1 Have previously purchased and registered FINAL FANTASY XIV.

2 All registered service accounts must be set as inactive during the campaign period.

3 Registered service account must have been inactive for at least thirty days.

Campaign Schedule
From Wednesday, June 15, 2022 at 1:00 a.m.
to Thursday, June 30, 2022 at 7:59 a.m. (PDT)

Free Login Period

How to participate

Select an offline friend from your in-game friends list or free company member list, then select Invite Friend to Return from the subcommand menu. Provided your friend meets the requirements of the campaign, they will receive an e-mail indicating you wish to invite them back to play FINAL FANTASY XIV.

Note:
- Each character registered to a service account can be used to invite friends up to five times. (The number of invitations allowed for each character will be reset after thirty days.)
- Invitation e-mails will include the name of the character used to send the invitation and the World on which they reside.
- Invitation e-mails will be sent once per day. In the event multiple players send invitations to the same character on the same day, a single e-mail will be sent listing the character names of all inviters.
- Invitation e-mails will not be sent to players who do not meet the requirements of the campaign. Furthermore, we cannot guarantee recipients will receive invitation e-mails.
- You will not be notified of whether or not the intended recipient meets the requirements of the campaign.

Eligibility
1. Players to be invited to return must have a service account that has been inactive for at least 90 days (including the free play period). Those who fail to meet this requirement will not receive an e-mail even if they have been invited to return.
2. Players to be invited to return must have purchased and registered FINAL FANTASY XIV to their service account.

Campaign Schedule
From Wednesday, September 7, 2022 at 1:00 a.m.
to Friday, September 30, 2022 at 1:00 a.m. (PDT)

Well I was.... I played for 2 weeks of free play around last month, after almost half year hiatus (forgot to update this thread oops ) I plan to resub for 6.5 somewhere December, for now I'm just kinda busy with other stuff...

Campaign Details
During the campaign period, users will be able to add Stormblood to their account for free by obtaining it from participating retailers. Once redeemed, Stormblood will be registered to your account and will not be removed after the campaign ends. Note that an active paid service subscription to FINAL FANTASY XIV Online is required to play.
