This has nothing to do with bumi rights or preferential treatment.

She was not denied a job, or a position or a place in a university. She was denied a place to live based on skin color.

Very matured of you to label as snowflake.

Guess this pemudi don't have an IC... I last recall IC passport or whatever heck to do with gov also asked for race. Maybe he just landed to Malaysia
*
Filling up race in a government form or IC has no implications to what you can wear, where you can live or what you can eat.

Being denied a home based on skin color is akin to being denied one of the basic human rights (food, shelter and clothing).

Snowflake is sensitive af.
Racial segregation mindsets stems from the government itself over the 60+ years of ruling and racial biased policies, it naturally carries over to Malaysia's sociology. You are just being self righteous here though.
*
Its easy to say when you dont have to feel the profiling and prejudice. Its already hard as it is with all other kinds of profiling and stereotypes. So yea some say move on and find other places. But believe it or nott, its almost a 95% chance of rejection when you are labelled as that "race"

Dont want to sit next to certain race on the LRT? no problem.

Locking car doors when certain race walk past? no problem.

Some races say its wrong to hire based on language capabilities. Another race complains that gov job intakes and varsity quotas are biased.

But denying someone a place to live which is a basic human right? = some malaysians call it "risk management".

So blaming the gov for the racism, you got no otak to distinguish what's right from wrong is it? I hope you see the irony and hypocrisy.

QUOTE(ju146 @ Jun 17 2022, 01:12 PM)
Then why do you need the race information at the first place. And race does have implication in this country under the government jurisdiction, unless Bumiputera rights, NEP, asnb, uni quota etc is some new vocab to you.

Can a non bumi buy malay reserve land or bumi freehold property or not
*
You dont get it do you. Why do you want something that is exclusive to help one race?

If you cant buy bumi lot, no problem, buy some other place. Want good investment returns like ASB? no problem, invest some other funds.

You were not denied the opportunity to make a living or invest via other avenues.

This i agree that such race based policies has been indoctrinated from the very formation of our country, agreed by all races and their leaders back then, heck its even in the constitution. So why complain now?

To put it bluntly the difference is, those quotas and policies are "add ons" for certain race. The other minorities were not denied the basics, or at least the freedom to make a living, gain an education or work in a desired profession.

On the other hand, the minority race is being denied a place to live. When there is a 90-95% rejection rate simply because you do not fit the preferred tenant skin color, where do you go from there?

The logic here reminds me alot of the recent theft logging issue where the deputy MB of Kelantan says the government should never be blamed.

Clearly your sense of logic is flawed .

Yes, i am one of whom who called it risk management & mitigation.

In your opinion, otherwise what it should be called then?

After one landlord has paid the price and the lessons, hassle evicting from non payment, complains from neighbours, property damages, unlawful use of premise, ran away tenants NOT only once, twice but thrice from indian tenants (no need to hide, i say in out, indian tenants)

Secondly, nobody is denying anybodys' basic human right here
*
I call it racism. Simply because every indian is painted with the same brush.

Secondly, nobody is denying anybodys' basic human right here > If a chinese is denied a bumi lot, no problem find a chinese landlord.
If a chinese is denied a gov job, no problem, work in a chinese company. Likewise for malays.

However due to being a much smaller minority and population, indians dont really have options.

You write so long and yet did not notice the government does practice rase based policy which contradict with your first reply?

Stop sugar coating, a discrimination is a discrimination (period)

On this analogy, the lady can rent other houses too, she has option to go. Or you saying we have written constitution I race cannot rent from other? It is preferential in this case over the government made it in written.
*
You are gravely wrong about this. The lady would have exhausted her options and resulting twitter post out of frustration, i know because i was once in the exact situation some years ago. Being a fresh grad coming out of a uni where all races lived, studied and had fun together, suddenly being told to get lost because you and i are not same anymore. Yes reality is harsh and i learned it the hard way.

I am grateful though i have had really nice chinese landlords (quite literally 1 in 20 ?) who looked past race and wanted some form of security (i.e. higher deposits, proof of employment < this is fair IMHO)

Like i said, once would never understand the prejudice and profiling that minorities go through. Being denied a place to stay is completely not the same as being denied other things such as jobs/positions/investments.

Discrimination is discrimination, but some discrimination is worse than others.

It really depends on your current position and status in life. The issue you are rambling about sounds more to lack of money which automatically limits your option of choices no matter your race.
*
Lack of money or not, isnt that an indication of unequal playing field? Privilege due to skin color?

And we are not talking about NEP/Quota/Jobs/Bumi perks. We are talking about a place to live.

Since you appear to be anti-discrimination based on what you write, why do you think it's fair to ask for higher deposits just because you're from certain race? Aren't you contradicting yourself.
*
I dont think so. A higher deposit and proper background check automatically filters out the problematic ones, and the same logic applies to all races. So i dont see how it is discriminatory

I dont disagree that higher tendency of trouble makers from certain race, and this would be an appropriate method to manage risk.

As another forumer pointed out, the same practice applies to the insurance and banking industry. Customer must be willing to pay for the service if they really want it. No one complains about that.

But outright deny a service based on skin color?

QUOTE(Cyberbullies @ Jun 17 2022, 02:13 PM)
What kind of sense of entitlement is this lmao.

Nobody owes you anything, certainly not the owner who has to bear all the risks so it’s only right for them to not take any chance and filter to the max.

Blaming the owner for choosing the best investment even though you are less wanted/attractive as an investment to the said owner is like, in a sense, asking for preferential treatment.

It’s a dog eat dog world nowadays so you can’t expect people to readily help you, much less jeopardising themselves just to help you.

All this talk about denying someone the “essentials or basic human rights” only makes sense when the owner owes that someone a duty, which obviously he/she doesn’t because he/she is not the government.

You can’t be discussing the difference in gravity between essentials and non-essentials when you have no right to expect such in the first place. That’s very presumptuous of you.

If anything you should be blaming your peers for creating that kind of perception.

Or better yet, ask why the government hasn’t done anything to tackle this issue because ultimately the government is the one responsible for the welfare of the people, not the common people.

The best short term solution is to try harder. Treat it as playing a game in hard mode. And no, other races do not get to choose either. It is what it is. Also doesn’t help when your teammates intentionally make the game harder by feeding themselves to the boss.

The force of market will fix this anyway. When there is a lack of “preferred” tenants in the market, those owners will naturally lower down their expectations.
*
Dont need TLDR, its irrelevant.

Though, you're absolutely right, no one owes me anything. I would not complain if the chicken rice aunty doesnt want to sell me CR. But when it comes to housing, lets just say our options are cut short drastically, and it would take one to be in our shoes to understand the frustration.

The frustration is about being denied a service based on skin color - this is called racism.

Taking certain steps to shield LL's investment by doing background checks etc - this is called Risk Mitigation

And just so you know, i never denied my "peers" can be problematic, but its wrong to paint all of us the same.

And about the governemnt, my assumption we are such a minority that the gov doesnt warrant its a serious enough issue just because there are so few of us. Like 7%?

Cute right? You the third person here already in short time span today to immediately see how contradicting this person is. lol.
*
The fact that many think im contradicting myself is a reflection that many dont really understand the frustration and difficulty in reality. It takes one to be in our shoes to know.

I dont expect the privileged to understand anyway

You are mixing things, putting in your experience and sentimental values, and derailed. I thought my original post was government is also asking for race and you say other wise. Sometimes we need to stay around the topic to discuss, writing long to no where does not help.

That will be funny to say Non in Malaysia does not understand bias and prejudice, isn't it?

Ohya, you mention about proof of employment is fair. What if someone got rejected because of shady employment? It seems like people are generally OK to be bias on anything else except race?

Not going to reply further as I wouldn't able to imagine where the topic will goes next.
*
My point is simple, racism is not the same type of discrimination as any other forms of discriminations. All those personal experience and sentiments, the root cause is the same - Racism.

I would understand why you have your privileged view point. Because privilege presents opportunities and options.

We dont choose our skin color when born. Everything else is a choice. Hope that clarifies.

Why not you take the lead to unpaint the old trail (indian tenancy) into a rosy tenancy landscape here with a new brush, unless you are saying > there is nothing (on indian tenancy trail) to undo here.

There must be a reason why a same trail that is too deeply felt by too many in the tenancy scene here.

What's your say?

On your last para, just adopt and adapt (AAA)
*
Oh yes, i agree there's lots to be done and i'm doing my every bit. And a fun fact, i'm actually from ICHS. The perception is not gonna reverse itself overnight. I am equally disappointed with the bad apples, let it be tenants or even in employment.

Unfortunately, adopt and adapt isnt the same for us as what you think. The playing field is drastically different for us.

All im asking is to be given opportunity, and not turned away immediately. And i have mentioned suggestions to help mitigate LL's risks.
