I just moved up to Penang for work and realize how messed up the traffic in Penang around Bayan Lepas area, can cause 1 hour jam for a short distance of 10km, despite leaving home around 6.45am...
Too many traffic lights and illogical right lanes, somemore high volume motor flow...

Haven't included those drivers who doesn't give signal in Penang

The most illogical part is how and why they wanted to implement traffic lights in a round about which is causing a major jam for those wanted to make a U Turn...





Anyone got any recommendation on where else to stay

Semua Salah LGE bad urban planning.

Oh ya, haven't get me started on the giant square longkangs in middle of the some roads
They Increase the Tar Road thickness, but don't bother to lift the longkang lid up, making a giant dangerous dent there...

[2] SJKC Min Sin / Persairan Bukit Jambul Traffic Light
[3] Bukit Jambul Mall before Petron Traffic Light
[4] Bukit Jambul Mall Pedestrian Crossing Traffic Light
[5] Roundabout Traffic Light
[6] Smooth route to Office normally all Green Light until Motorola


(B) 8.2 km Airport Route - Too many schools and high volume motorcycle traffic.
[1] Lintang Sg Ara 11
[2] Persairan Relau Traffic Light
[3] SK Sg Ara Traffic Light
[4] Mosque Traffic Light Turn Left - *ignores Traffic Light*
[5] Jalan Bayan route to Giant Traffic Light 1
[6] Jalan Bayan route to Giant Traffic Light 2 - Pantai Hospital
[7] Jalan Bayan route to Giant Traffic Light 3 - McDonalds
[8] Jalan Bayan route to Giant Traffic Light 3 - Eng Hardware Engineering -- Heavy Traffic with shits tons of Motorcycle here
[9] Dangerous sharp 45 degree turn need to avoid motor
[10] ASE Electronics (Questionable one way / two way route if no JPJ jaga road)
[11] Smooth transitions to office.

Well mungkin I live nearby KL-Seremban highway as a kid, always had a perception that 10km route 20 mins can reach.

I rather stay in Ipoh than Penang TQ.

Welp, most likely will move back down to KL after sometime. I kennot deal with this jam wasting 2 hours of my life everyday.

Use different route but it will be further, or leave office earlier/later.

That is a good idea. KL also very nice.

A few options before you go back to KL.
1) Maybe have dinner / finish up some work and only go back after peak hours, it will be much easier. Many people staying over on the mainland do this.
2) Maybe try to learn how to ride a bike. Will save you at least an hour each day.

so far found 2 routes.
Either go via Airport route. 8km but shit tons if motor and traffic light.
Else the route can see the Sea view the 10km route, lesser motor.

Or i move to Pantai Jerjak / Summerton area. I stayed at OYO B Hotel before took me 10 mins to reach office.

or i leave home before 6.30am see whether can reach office. Provided if my stomach doesnt sakit perut on the way to office. 😂

Lol, I used to live in Sg Ara when I was working in Bayan Lepas about a decade ago. That 8km would take me 30 mins and I was like FTS. Moved back to PJ for good after doing a year there

lol welcome to Penang. Once you learn the peak hour timings you can shave 10-15 min off your commute. 645 is too late for you depending on where you stay

JKR did exactly this thing in sabah
after a while, nobody follow the traffic lights anymore because it creates unnecessary jam at the roundabout instead of letting it free flow

I think they might need to kill one or two traffic lights imho. at the round about heading to Krystal Point and Sg Nibong bus terminal

Before the traffic light system traveling just the 100m before entering the roundabout can 1 hour if I remember correctly

(1) well Office in Hybrid state so kinda pointless.
Everyone left office around 3pm 4pm haha.
So dont want be gila person starve in office at 6pm to 8pm.
also they dont technically allow grab food. unless i pack my dinner to work everyday. but then will get demotivated to work easily la.

(2) Ride a Motorcycle most likely. But i doubt my residential area there considered safe. Motorcycles around this area really gila high volume.
Bicycle I think should be similar and sweaty... 🥵

Why not work in klang Valley?

well the office is nearby the end of Penang 2nd bridge.
Majority of the time wasted might be due to parents sending their kids to school around the SPICE area.

There are two routes:
(i) Airport route has shit tons of motors, shorter distance 8.2km. But has like 10 traffic lights. Needs JPJ to control traffic. Very hard to change lanes.

(ii) The route I shown 10km distance, majority of the time is stuck at SPICE to Bkt Jambul to the roundabout at Bayan Baru, afterwards smooth 10 min traffic to office.

Who ask u to come penang. Intel if flexi hour right?

Back when I lived in Relau and worked in Bayan Lepas, I used mainly the back route via Bukit Jambul, pop out near Sungai Nibong bus station and then head towards roundabout for a relatively smooth left turn then head to FIZ.

Not sure if that route still feasible though.

So your only problem is the mornings? Maybe try to beat the jam by starting early, try 6.30 am?

Just thinking kinda necessary to go Penang to discuss work with colleagues and easier pass down la.

Also timing was right as I found a condo medium room with cheap rent. And building not too old.

KL area also need about one hour to reach 10km distance. It depend where you stay and your destination.

Penang got no LRT or MRT, thats really shameful and bad.

As a Penangite, previous GOVT should has already has this inplace but....really sad....

Even if give me money, I will still avoid if need to traverse Sungai Ara towards that roundabout.

If rent, consider QBM area condo/apartment lo. Nearer.

I saw map, saw near airport can fly back to KLIA2 any time I want, saw near Golden Triangle/Elite Avenue/Promenade/SPICE Cafe should have plenty of good food to eat.

Check Google Maps thought 15mins to work either Airport or Roundabout route should be ok and flexible.

anyone knows Batu Maung is a good place to consider if work at Bayan Lepas? other than queensbay or summerton areas. i see got new condo there like M Vista at batu maung. facing laut also that place.

Have you considered exiting Sungai Ara to the right instead of towards roundabout? passing Hospital Pantai/Giant/Caltex straight merge into Jalan Sultan Azlan then straight into the industrial area towards Pantai Seagate?
It's made one-way traffic merging into Sultan Azlan, so should be faster, no?


(i'm not well-versed with the weekday morning traffic pattern there, take the suggestion with salt)

The Giant junction is badly badly badly jammed.

Penang drivers tend to bully those with W or B plates.

Each I to drove down to PG, will use my P plate car and bully them back.

Giving signal is a sign of weakness in Penang. So, don't give any.

If staying Sg Ara you need to leave by 630. Makes a huge difference in commute time. I laugh seeing 15mins. 15mins is only for retirees and NBTD who come out during non-peak hours/days. In Penang, you have to try to avoid rush hour, which means going to and returning from work, start and end of school, and long weekends.

how about for those travelling from Batu Kawan to Bayan Lepas? at what time should they leave house to office?

You're definitely wrong if you think removing the traffic light will improve the traffic.

I think traffic in that direction is generally not an issue. Once you hit the on ramp to the 2nd bridge, it's smooth sailing until you reach the industrial zone. Crossing the bridge itself is about 15-20 minutes give or take.

but at non-peak hours, this thing is a waste of resources...many times u would see it being empty because all the cars already finish crossing and it still remain red on the other side
so at the end they scrapped it completely and let it free flow...the found out adding additional "susur tepi" lane makes more sense

Thats near the industrial area, mesti la jam. Traffic from mainland to work in island pun will go through that route. You could use the route that goes towards Bayan Baru area, near Giant. The easiest is use moto la.

from relau to intel why didnt you use the sunshine square then cut into the factory area there more nearer. i think you got stuck at the chinese school opposite SPICE. there is already a plan to construct overhead which from before the bukit jambul traffic light can go straight to near queensbay highway there.

Now only u realised how bad Penang jam

This is why I jumped to SG in 2016.
Until now, no regret.
