I was really surprised that there wasn't any thread on studio ghibli's anime apart from the topic of their upcoming release. Does everybody dislike the anime or what?...My opinion is that they make a very memorable anime and character despite tales from earthsea being a fiasco but likable. Even my 3yrold daughter watched Totoro more than 30 times in japanese dub and can sing the opening theme rclxms.gif tongue.gif (not very well thou tongue.gif)

In my book theres only two depressing cartoon/anime One is fireflies and one is the little mermaid(Not disney's) any1 remember that cartoon?

dust bunnies tongue.gif tongue.gif --->susuwatari
QUOTE
Susuwatari (ススワタリ lit. meaning "travelling soot") are the "dust bunnies" or "soot sprites" first featured in My Neighbor Totoro as shy, slightly frightful creatures that live in abandoned buildings such as houses. They later reappeared in Spirited Away as workers in Kamaji's boiler room. They are small, black as soot and apparently fuzzy, with spherical bodies and two inquisitive eyes. They move by hovering around, but they can extend stick-like legs and arms from their bodies to do certain tasks, and can lift objects many times heavier than their own weight. They make a squeaky murmuring sound when excited, and dissolve into powder (soot) if crushed.

In My Neighbour Totoro, the house the main characters move into is full of Susuwatari, which are rationalized as Makkuro Kurosuke (pitch-black blackie), an optical illusion caused by moving quickly from light into darkness. Later, the family drives the Susawatari out of the house, as the home that was once abandoned is now inhabited. They would move to another abandoned area.

In Spirited Away, the protagonist Sen (Chihiro) befriends a number of them by helping them carry coal. Sen is told that if these Susuwatari aren't given a job to do, they turn back into soot. Another character, Lin, feeds the Susuwatari much like farmers feed chickens, throwing handfuls of the Japanese candy Kompeito onto the ground for them to eat.

During world war II, you will see whom is the selfish and giving type... I like fireflies show because of the love from the brother to sister and vice-versa. Its a great show to remind ourself how fortunate we are at the moment icon_rolleyes.gif

I have the original VCDs for Grave, Spirited and Howl's. My appreciation towards Grave was half ruined thanks to the poor dubbing. Didn't shed a tear but felt depressed watching it.

Mononoke, spirited away, fireflies, totoro are my all time fav...almost all of ghibli's were got remastered ver,so no bother by oldies effect anymore..

fireflies shows what a human could turn when during havoc situations like the blardy auntie...all this time she act good coz the parents around, but when parents nomore, she dont care bout the kids lor~...

almost all of ghibli's work are magnificient despite their character design(well,it is what they call "imagination" right)...

like mononoke in eng dub...get to hear Agent.Scully, hahahahaha

Spirited Away was the first Ghibli anime I watch ... it was very nice, this movie won some awards right?

Totoro dubbed in cantonese is much funnier ...

Now Popular bookstore selling whole DVD collection for RM35.90 only. Doesn't have Tales of Earthsea, though.

Did anyone watch Tales of Earthsea? I thought it sucked. Watching the movie thinking how meaningless it was. Maybe I should go read the books. =/

Hi guys, I'm looking to get a Studio Ghibli collection set for my niece, so wondering what the best place is in KL to get the DVDs? I'm looking for good quality subtitled ones, & preferably as many movies in one boxset as possible.

Saw a good-looking one in Time Square, had everything upto Ponyo & shop looked semi-legit, unfortunately the video quality was atrocious.

Can someone recommend me a shop in KL that I can get the set (preferably without region encoding, as my niece is in Australia & all their players seem to be region locked there)? HELP!!!

But this is a nice cover of the Mononoke Hime theme song:

Don't bother, even those individual titles still have terrible PQ, can imagine how terrible those bundle packs would look like.

They are now all in individual metal boxset. The picture quality is not bad just that before you start the show there would be a 10min annoying ad of other shows which u cant skip. shakehead.gif

I watched the metal box Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, both PQs are darker and so much blurier than their original HK counterparts. Plus the sound was encoded in stereo only for metal box copies, while original copies have Dolby surround encodings. If you don't mind those then it is still a great purchase. Oh and you can skip those ads if you are playing them with a Philips BD/DVD players, so far that's the only brand I have owned that have this function to let you skip to whatever part of the disc content biggrin.gif
