hi, i have not setup any VPN before. Total noob.
As I am spending more time WFH ever since MCOs, i thinking maybe I should start safeguarding my activities/or data moving forward.
I skimmed through alot of past threads here, but there are so many recommendations. I checked the price for a few, some are super cheap (less than 10rm per month, some are like more than 50rm per month)
The more I read, the more i am lost, till the stage I do not know how to gauge what is good for me.

Most of the time i:
a. p2p download (at the moment i usually hit 3mb ish)
b. netflix (smart tv)
c. soundcloud (pc)

My router:
a. standard unifi 30mpbs, using stock ZTE provided by unifi

My desired needs:
1. If possible to set router to share VPN across devices e.g. tv, android tablet, phone, pc, that will be awesome, but hopefully the learning curve not that steep and its like a one-time setup (no need to sign-in everytime restart router or modem)
2. Netflix. If its a hassle, I can live with not using VPN for netflix (smart tv) and tablet. I can just login VPN via pc everytime.
3. more secured surfing
4. I can access to more content if certain content is restricted by region. (mainly US content)
5. uncapped/unlimited quota as i p2p dl quite regularly
6. soundcloud content (i listen to alot of synthpop, house, ambient tracks)

Ultimately, the main priorities; hoping to dl p2p abit more anonymously, listen to my soundcloud (often encounter tracks not available in our region) and have a more secured surfing.
Best is if VPN is setup via router, then no need to keep loggin in here and there in devices, but if beyond my capabilities, then i am ok with just using PC.

Your advice is much appreciated! notworthy.gif

You need to change a better grade router for this kind of usage.
VPN consume quite a lot of CPU usage to decrypt and encrypt data.

for p2p download, better setup the vpn on your pc, pc cpu is much more powerful to handle the data then router. (Different vpn usage use different vpn server)

And also normally public/commercial vpn service don’t really have secure privacy, some of them actually collecting user information.
(for 100% privacy, better setup your own vpn server with openvpn or something else)

I personally setup VPNs on my router(mikrotik RB5009) with wireguard protocol.

Buy openwrt router with a decent cpu power ( GL-inet Ax1800) and subs to any vpn (openvpn, wireguard etc) provider that provide manual router config( airvpn, nordvpn, surfshark ).

thks for reply.
I googled wireguard protocol, seemed complicated.
In that case i think i use vpn on pc instead of configuring it on router.

Yes,Try to get more info about VPN provider first. You can start duckduckgo torrentfreak.
Just be extra careful about ipv6 when setting manual vpn on router, better still to disable ipv6 completely.

GL-iNet devices run on Openwrt, they have their UI which makes running wireguard simple.
Wireguard is more lightweight, so definitely will be able to max out your line.

if using OpenVPN, get Asus ones will be easy to configure, but will need to be decently powerful.

find out what provider has no log policy and all and decide what you want.
