Hi all, sharing my progression here as a dotnet software developer.
My background is not IT but I started my career in IT as a software developer.
I am a Mechanical Engineering degree graduate from TARUC (Setapak).

My monthly gross salary in RM (not including allowances, only base) progression:
2016 (started in Dec): 3K
2017: 3.3K (confirmation) -> 3.6K
2018: 3.8K -> 6K (promotion)
2019: 6.5K
2020: 6.7K -> 8.1K (new job)
2021: 10K (new job)
2022: 16K (new job)

Sorry for the soooo abstracted information, just in case my colleague will see my post here.
A bit more context, all these are in Malaysia, I'm not doing remote job and converting currency (some people like to convert, for example from SGD to MYR as their earning).

Sharing this for the benefits of other software developers, there are a few companies I know that they could afford RM 10K monthly for people who have less than 5 years of working experience.

The annual bonus I got from these companies is average 1.5 months.
I am grateful with what I have now at my current age (below 30 years old).

I know a dotnet software developer who has been working in the field for > 10 years and he get around rm6-7k as a project leader. And he is nearly 40 yo. Your salary is very high considering you are below 30yo only.

I don't like to say this but why is age related to pay? That's the most common way of HR lowballing talents.

Well, i guess, when your age is older, basically meant you have more experiences, when you have more experienced higher chance meaning you know more things, thus you might get higher salary. Many HR might take this as a factor to gauge what they should pay the candidate besides those certificates, past works, etc. I think that makes sense.

My case here was talking about coders, i think a coder who just worked for 1-2 years or totally no work experiences can get very high salary too, just show the company / HR the works they have done while in school / free time, show the company / HR how much knowledges they have and why they are qualified for high paid. Last time i played a game called "Runescape", the creator of the game, before he graduated already had many companies offering him super high paid hoping he could join their companies.

I see a lot of DevOps/SRE/Software Development job right now which don't require CS undergraduate. My current employer also don't mind at all that I didn't finish my degree. In my situation I do a lot of self-learning regarding CI/CD, IaC, Cloud Computing, monitoring systems to name a few (which are not covered in most of the CS undergraduate in Malaysia) with basic like programming, networking, security and OS already learned during undergraduate before dropping out. It's also common to meet other people coming from unrelated undergraduate major and working in the tech job with self-learning. As long as you prove that you have the skills required and self-driven, I think that should be fine. It could also be because my current company is based in USA where self-taught and bootcamp are much more acceptable than in Malaysia.

My boss never look at the cert. When he thinks a candidate is ok, he will hire the candidate for testing, and in that 1-2 months probations, if he notices the candidate is unable to do what he/she claims, he will straight away say byebye to the candidate.

No idea what makes people feel this is troll..... Maybe they aren't up to the level yet

Let me tell you a story.

1. When people getting RM3k salary, they don't believe other people can get RM5k.
2. For those people who get RM5k, they doubt people who told them get RM8k.
3. Rm8k people will doubt those who get RM15k, and the story
4. Continue....

Most people think their salaries are good enough or very hard to go up anymore, so when they hear someone give them a number they think they can't achieve, they will have doubts.
