Is there a laptop where the original battery will not expand after say 3 of 4 years of use which will require a new battery replacement? As much as I love my HP Elitebook, the battery cannot last long, average 2 years before it expands causing the keypad to bulge and come up a bit. I have replaced the battery twice already and it's happening for the 3rd time.

3 or 4 years

So far my Asus ROG and another HP laptop no issue. Had the same experience with shitty Illegear, 3rd year using experience battery bulging, replace battery, +-2 years later same shit. Removed the battery, let it run perma on ac adapter ok.

Took out the battery, let it sit, over time can see bulging more and more..then throw at e-waste collection centre before it explodes.

Thanks for the response. Surprisingly your HP laptop does not have the bulging battery issue. I have taken out the battery from the laptop and am now running it with direct power from the wall outlet. The battery has been thrown into the rubbish bin.

I like the HP Elitebook range as the case is quite solid. When typing on the keypad, the pad won't flex or sag even though the hands are resting on it. With other cheaper laptops, the keypad will sag and you can feel the flimsiness of it.

I have an old Asus U36JC laptop that bought 10yrs ago.
The laptop is still in using without battery problem.
But having fan problem (rattling noise when running, laptop still can be used) which no longer can find the original fan.

Heat is the primary enemy of the battery itself.

When you run your laptop under high or full load most of times, then the heat is the primary cause of early battery failure (bulging, lesser capacity, etc.).

Get a laptop cooler pad. The battery will last much much longer. Avoid rapid charge-discharge cycle. The lesser the charge cycles, the longer the battery will last. Modern laptop battery and the charging circuity has cut-off feature when fully charged. From my experience of using various makes of laptops, the heat is the primary cause of failure other than poor/random battery quality (even for big brands).

Even the few gaming laptops that I had for several years, the battery is still in excellent/good condition. If yours is a gaming laptop which usually has a dGPU then a good cooler pad is a MUST! Don't keep the laptop CPU/GPU at over 70% load at long duration. Otherwise, get a desktop unit which has much better cooling/airflow capacity.

I don't do any gaming with the laptop. Just using it to do basic stuff such as Microsoft Word, Excel, surfing the internet and listening to music. I have the laptop switched on for an average 3 to 4 hours a day before it's switched off. Slightly longer hours on the weekends.

Will look into a cooling pad for the laptop soon.

My guess is that it's related to battery tech too

Some laptops use Li-Ion cells in bulky hard pack for battery, some use Li-Po batteries (like phones) which are one flat pack that tends to swell

I've used an asus laptop before for 2-3 years and have no problem with battery bulging, currently using acer for almost the 5th year. No issues as well.
It also depends on the battery tech and how well you take care of your battery health I guess, cheers!

Just remove them by the time they get bloated...

Then run an external PD powerbank.

Built in battery get bloated easily.
Previously can take out easier to change without damaging TouchPad and back case.

I have two HP laptops bloated as both using the same same battery model as HT03XL. Thinking to change but afraid not good later.

Avoid HP if don't wanna bloated battery.
Other brand no bloated but malfunction.

I never had that HP notebook battery bloating issue last 16 years. Been using multiple company offered laptop which is HP, that we use for 4 years before a new one is replaced. Currently on EliteBook 840 G8.

I presume you have been using original charging adapter, right. Hmmm Did you check with HP what is the reason its happening?

Frankly, all my laptops, battery kong after 3-4 years, if not earlier.

Its a given, even phone batteries also become pregnant bulging. But if u go for popular models like T480, easy to get spare preloved batt (ori)

Battery is removable or built-in? Am currently seeking for a model with removable batteries to avoid this risk but seems to be quite rare nowadays.

As for compact notebooks, majority are build-in batteries, removable batteries are very rare since it makes the notebook thicker/heavier.

macbook pro 2013 till i abandoned also no issue.

Older laptops using 18650 cells won't expand. Which is why I never upgrade beyond 4th gen.

My MBP battery expanded till the trackpad bulged up. Luckily the replacement is cheap and battery easy to replace due to it being a 3rd gen.
